Overview

This account analyzes ancient armies in terms of modern military doctrine, allowing the reader to make comparisons between the combatants. While various types of governments prepared for and waged war in significantly different ways, Bradford finds that better organization led to success on the battlefield and that, for the most part, societal innovation was more important than technological innovation. The ongoing discussion of the lessons of ancient warfare around the globe will provide valuable insights for interested general readers and military professionals alike.

Editorial Reviews

Booknews
Studying not only the histories of Greece and Rome, but also the Near East, Parthia, India and China, Bradford (U. of Oklahoma) explores the battles of the ancient world, following their changing relationships with the rise and fall of empires, the roles of leadership and technology, and the developments of strategy and tactics. He discusses the differences in the sociology of the groups at war, including recruitment and the various ways by which governments prepared for war, and argues that while technology (particularly the compound bow and the chariot) lead to some victories, it was more often the more organized and socially innovative force who found the ultimate victories. Heavily illustrated with maps and reproductions of art depicting ancient battles and warriors. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

    Confused

Interesting but the writing is somewhat jumpy ie. moving from idea to idea. Elementry but intertaining

    Interesting and well researched, but...

The different periods of time are defined according to a similarity of weapons technology & tactics, with insight into strategy; then broken down into discreet groups and locations (i.e. Asia, Persia, Mediterranean, Egypt). This is very well accomplished throughout the book. However, there was not a congruency throughout the time periods/technology level. Some sections would have detailed battle synopses, with little given to anecdotal information about particular individuals, except well known or established persons, yielding no information about culture or society of the time. The next section might then omit nearly all battle or weapons discussion and instead convey through anecdotal evidence what the period was like for people who lived it. This indecisiveness yields a 'jumpiness' that is unsatisfying and distracting. I would have enjoyed a book that focused on either aspect, but the juxtaposition of the two in the same volume was...annoying and unsatifactory.

    I Also Recommend:

    Amazing

If you are a history buff, this book is a must have in your collection. It details the military strategies of cultures as far back as the early sumerians. The writing is very detailed yet in simple english so its extremely easy to understand. It also has pictures throughout the book that go along with the text.
Overall this book is a great collaboration of ancient history, and for a someone who loves this subject (like me) it is a must have.
