Overview

Father Walter Ciszek, S.J., author of the best-selling He Leadeth Me, tells here the gripping, astounding story of his twenty-three years in Russian prison camps in Siberia, how he was falsely imprisoned as an "American spy", the incredible rigors of daily life as a prisoner, and his extraordinary faith in God and commitment to his priestly vows and vocation. He said Mass under cover, in constant danger of death. He heard confession of hundreds who could have betrayed him; he aided spiritually many who could have gained by exposing him. This is a remarkable story of personal experience. It would be difficult to write fiction that could honestly portray the heroic patience, endurance, fortitude and complete trust in God lived by Fr. Walter Ciszek, S.J.

If you want to know what true faith is, read this book! Once you pick it up you cannot put it down! You feel like you are right there in Russia with this priest!! A must to read!!

I have read this book four or five times and it is one of my favorites. But it is incorrect to say "23 years in Siberian Prison Camps." The book is much more interesting than that! 10 years in Siberian prison camps following 5 years in various Soviet prisons, followed by another 8 years as a Russian citizen before Cisznek was allowed to leave Russia and return to the U.S. A most compelling read.

Father Ciszek's journey through life with only his faith, leaves one questioning 'what do I have to complain about.' A self proclaimed stubborn boy and young man, Father Ciszek is reduced to being truly one with God. Never giving up his faith, he finds a way (or it finds him) to practice, teach, and prophetize his faith in an aetheistic country and while doing 15 years of hard labor! Whenever you don't 'feel like' going to church or to the sacraments, just remember what this one man went through for his love of the sacraments and you'll never feel lazy again practicing your faith.

The life of Walter Ciszek is most remarkable. It proves the potential for each of us to become saintly in ordinary as well as in highly demanding situations. He has been a great inspiration to me in accepting God's will in difficult times.
