Editorial Reviews

Amy Finnerty
Jane Goodall's extraordinary respect and affection for the chimps she has lived among since 1960 are conveyed resoundingly in these stories. -- New York Times Book Review
Publishers Weekly
"These vignettes of varying length-based on Goodall's observations of nearly 40 years in the Tanzanian bush-lay bare the remarkable relationships of several chimpanzees without sentimentality. This volume will surely get youngsters thinking about what they can do to help save these surprisingly complex and social animals," said PW. Ages 6-10. (Mar.)
Children's Literature - Susie Wilde
Her forty years of observation and experience with chimps provides the necessary background for these ten short stories. The author tells of the chimps' love, compassion and altruism. The wonderful themes of trust, dependence, caring and tenderness emphasize the tender relationships she has discovered in the primate world. The illustrations record the deep soulful eyes, the emotions of their relationship and the beauty of the flora and fauna that surround them.
Children's Literature - Joyce Rice
The world of the chimpanzee is best introduced by one who has made their study her life's work. Jane Goodall introduces us to several of the chimpanzees as though they were her next door neighbors. Through her eyes, we learn about their mating habits, the way they care for their young, and the things they eat. For children who thirst for knowledge about this animal, this book will be most welcome. However, it is not particularly suitable as a nonfiction title to provide research materials for middle school libraries. Although this book does give readers insight into the everyday lives of the chimpanzees, researchers would have to read the entire book to get adequate information for a report. However, if you have readers who are fascinated by these animals, or readers who have a special love for all animals, include this title in your collection.
