Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Andrea Brott
Each page of this wonderful book contains a short poem that's also a riddle. Kids (and grown-ups) will have a great time guessing the riddles-and if they have any trouble, each of the accompanying illustrations contains a visual clue to the right answer (the answers are also written, upside down, at the bottom of the page). This book is the one to choose if you're looking to interest children in something other than prose. The poems are clever and well-written, the pictures engaging and amusing, and children listen and look carefully because they want to solve the riddles.
School Library Journal
Gr 2-5-An engaging, attractively designed collection of 26 original riddles, many in rhyme. ``I have five arms but no head./I sleep in a water bed./I never see what I am named after'' (a starfish); ``I'm tall and thin./I stand at attention/in the kitchen/with all my friends./At dinner, hands throw us/into a boiling pot./We go limp with shock/and are quickly eaten up'' (a strand of spaghetti). The answers appear upside down in small print at the bottom of each page. Humorous, delicate, detailed watercolor illustrations offer clues to each puzzle.-Sally R. Dow, Ossining Public Library, NY
Carolyn Phelan
A relief from the puns and groaners that fill most riddle books, these three-line verses recall more ancient queries--the question rhymes from Mother Goose, perhaps, or the riddle game between Bilbo Baggins and Gollum in "The Hobbit". Here's one: "Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz! / I have ten thousand teeth / but I never go to the dentist" (zipper). Blegvad's imaginative watercolors illustrate the word puzzles with delicacy and charm, offering subtle hints but leaving room for guesswork. A quiet, satisfying book of riddling rhymes.
