    Highly Recommended!

    This is a different and very rewarding kind of read that deserves the attention of anyone who wants to make their photography more fulfilling. While there is coverage here of the "craft" of picture taking, ( f-stops, shutter speeds, megapixels, etc. ) the emphasis is on producing visually compelling images that effectively communicate the photographer's feelings to the viewer. duChemin is an exceptionally gifted photographer who can get his message across verbally as well as visually - and without any hint of assumed superiority. There's no "talking down" to the reader, just an obvious genuine effort to explain and illustrate - and it succeeds admirably, in my opinion. This is a book by a gentleman who knows what he's talking about, and it's most worthy of your attention.

    buy it, you won't regret it

    this is a wonderfully helpful book on so many levels. without question if you are interested in photography at any level this will inspire and guide you to take better pictures, if you are a student wondering what to do with all the technical skill you learned it will help you learn how to find your vision, or even for the pro who maybe forgot why they became a photographer in the first place.
    it is written in a very clear and accessible way. even those who would normally prefer to learn by doing then taking the time to read a book will find that it is more like getting great advice from a knowledgeable pro over coffee rather than the usual boring textbook style so many experts seem to fall into.
    the big surprise for me was to find that it isn't only helpful when it comes to finding your photographic vision, it is also a great guide for how to experience a new place or culture in a meaningful way. so whether you are a photographer who travels or a traveler who takes pictures, you will surely benefit by reading this book before your next trip. as someone who has traveled to many different countries i can say confidently that many people would find the advice in this book much better for getting the most out of your trip than your lonely planet or other guide book. it will teach you how to not just see a place like thousands of other tourists but to see how it is for you, from your unique perspective, at that moment in time.
    the author also takes time to remind you that all the same ideas that help you make the most out of your photographs of a new place can help you notice the interesting shots of your hometown as well.
    this book definitely exceeded my expectations and has helped me not just to understand how to find my own vision, but also to better recognize and appreciate the vision of others in their photographs.

    A "must read" if you have more than a passing interest in photography.

    I love this book. It works on so many levels. There are so many books on photography out there about the 'how'. Finally a book about the 'why'. Within The Frame appeals to both the geek and the artist in me. And manages to put every other aspect of photography into perspective. With a firm grasp on vision (the 'why')... everything else becomes clearer.

    The book itself is gorgeous. Filled with some of my favourite photographs. Kudos to Peachpit Press for making such a beautiful book. I have two of David's prints hanging on my walls, so I was curious to see the print quality. It's really very good. Also loving the square format!

    This book was a surpise. I learned of it when someone on a foru

    This book was a surpise. I learned of it when someone on a forum asked why their pictures looked plain, while others can take images of something mundane but make it look like it belongs in a museum. I'd asked this same question a few years earlier, my images were technicality perfect but lacking. Someone answered that poster to read David duChemin books, in particular this one.

    I decided I would too. I could hardly stop reading, I read the book in just 3 days. I found it life changing, I have a vision now that I pursue with my images I never had. Where I previously took 15 images of the same thing hoping one worked, deleting all but the best I now see and understand what I want & need. Looking at others great images, I now see and understand what and why they are great. I personally found this book life changing... particularly to the person taking many images of the same thing and finding their images look like a technically perfect image with no soul or purpose.

    Another great purchase

    The book selection, the ordering process and the content of the photo books purchased from the Barnes and Noble website, make the building of my classroom library of photo books even more vast. This book is very good at informing the students on how to look for the processes of CREATING a photo. Thanks!
