Overview

Writing as J.D. Robb, Nora Roberts presents the tenth book in the New York Times bestselling series. When a celebrity is killed right before her eyes, New York detective Eve Dallas takes a new place in crime--as both officer and witness to murder....

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
It is 2059, and New York City homicide lieutenant Eve Dallas's husband, Roarke, is producing a revival of Agatha Christie's thriller Witness for the Prosecution. On opening night, when the villainous character Leonard Vole gets his just deserts, someone substitutes a kitchen knife for the prop knife, and the actor, Richard Draco, is stabbed through the heart. Trouble is, in time-tested British mystery fashion, everyone in the cast had good reason to despise Richard, a misogynist who seduced and discarded beautiful young women, including one whom he knew to be his daughter. It's up to Eve to solve the case, an emotionally difficult task as she is no stranger to incest herself: she was beaten and raped by her father before she managed to escape him. As Eve fights to keep her head above water, she tries to bond at a deeper level with Roarke, so that her future will heal the pain of her past. Robb (aka Nora Roberts) serves up a welcome mix of edgy, sexy lovers, newfangled gadgets, classic whodunit and noir. (Mar.) Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.|
Library Journal

New York City cop Eve Dallas and her husband, Roark, attend an opening of a performance of Agatha Christie's Witness for the Prosecutionat Roark's new theater. Eve is unfamiliar with the classic story, but she responds to it with her cop's instincts and recognizes the perpetrator long before the finale. However, the play ends unexpectedly even for Roark, when the villain is actually killed in the last scene. Eve immediately takes control. With her trusted assistant, Peabody, she must find out who substituted the real knife for the prop and thus caused an actress unwittingly to commit murder. It soon becomes clear that the victim was an evil creep who ruined lives for his own sport. Most of the other actors had reason to kill him, and professional actors are pretty good at playing innocent. Susan Ericksen has become the voice of Eve Dallas for audiobook listeners and continues to delight us with her interpretations-tough, sharp, irritable Eve; warm, melodious Irish Roark; and down-to-earth Peabody. Listeners who are familiar with Christie's work will find Robb's 21st-century version amusing. Recommended for all collections.

Meet the Author

Nora Roberts
Nora Roberts

Nora Roberts is the number-one New York Times-bestselling author of more than 150 novels, including High Noon, Angels Fall, Blue Smoke, and Northern Lights. She is also the author of the bestselling futuristic suspense series written under the pen name J. D. Robb. There are more than 280 million copies of her books in print.

Biography

Not only has Nora Roberts written more bestsellers than anyone else in the world (according to Publishers Weekly), she’s also created a hybrid genre of her own: the futuristic detective romance. And that’s on top of mastering every subgenre in the romance pie: the family saga, the historical, the suspense novel. But this most prolific and versatile of authors might never have tapped into her native talent if it hadn't been for one fateful snowstorm.

As her fans well know, in 1979 a blizzard trapped Roberts at home for a week with two bored little kids and a dwindling supply of chocolate. To maintain her sanity, Roberts started scribbling a story -- a romance novel like the Harlequin paperbacks she'd recently begun reading. The resulting manuscript was rejected by Harlequin, but that didn't matter to Roberts. She was hooked on writing. Several rejected manuscripts later, her first book was accepted for publication by Silhouette.

For several years, Roberts wrote category romances for Silhouette -- short books written to the publisher's specifications for length, subject matter and style, and marketed as part of a series of similar books. Roberts has said she never found the form restrictive. "If you write in category, you write knowing there's a framework, there are reader expectations," she explained. "If this doesn't suit you, you shouldn't write it. I don't believe for one moment you can write well what you wouldn't read for pleasure."

Roberts never violated the reader's expectations, but she did show a gift for bringing something fresh to the romance formula. Her first book, Irish Thoroughbred (1981), had as its heroine a strong-willed horse groom, in contrast to the fluttering young nurses and secretaries who populated most romances at the time. But Roberts's books didn't make significant waves until 1985, when she published Playing the Odds, which introduced the MacGregor clan. It was the first bestseller of many.

Roberts soon made a name for herself as a writer of spellbinding multigenerational sagas, creating families like the Scottish MacGregors, the Irish Donovans and the Ukrainian Stanislaskis. She also began working on romantic suspense novels, in which the love story unfolds beneath a looming threat of violence or disaster. She grew so prolific that she outstripped her publishers' ability to print and market Nora Roberts books, so she created an alter ego, J.D. Robb. Under the pseudonym, she began writing romantic detective novels set in the future. By then, millions of readers had discovered what Publishers Weekly called her "immeasurable diversity and talent."

Although the style and substance of her books has grown, Roberts remains loyal to the genre that launched her career. As she says, "The romance novel at its core celebrates that rush of emotions you have when you are falling in love, and it's a lovely thing to relive those feelings through a book."

Good To Know

Roberts still lives in the same Maryland house she occupied when she first started writing -- though her carpenter husband has built on some additions. She and her husband also own Turn the Page Bookstore Café in Boonsboro, Maryland. When Roberts isn't busy writing, she likes to drop by the store, which specializes in Civil War titles as well as autographed copies of her own books.

Roberts sued fellow writer Janet Dailey in 1997, accusing her of plagiarizing numerous passages of her work over a period of years. Dailey paid a settlement and publicly apologized, blaming stress and a psychological disorder for her misconduct.

It is a great read. Anyone should enjoy it.

I enjoy all of the J.D.Robb In death series and have recently gotten a nook and am in the process of acquiring all of them. I am always impressed with the research that is done on each story and Witness in Death was no exception. The characters in Witness are actors which also adds more drama. Any who read this will be hooked on all of the in death series. Happy reading.

    enjoy this series

Nora Roberts writing as JD Robb has a winning series here. Eve Dallas is the Homicide detective of the future and Roarke is her exciting sexy spouse. The mysteries keep you guessing to the end and romance is steamy while still sweet. The characters keep things interesting. I enjoy the images Ms Roberts gives us of her idea of the future. The imagery is clear, makes me, as the reader believe its really there while I'm reading the story. Even with all the extras, the murder mystery remains the main focus. She always throws in exciting twists that really keeps you on your toes. Sometimes Eve "just knows" who the killer is, but doesn't know how to prove it, and sometimes she struggles with the outcome until the very end. Either way, If you like mysteries, this series is going to keep your attention. The books can be read in order but don't need to be to be understood. Each book, while it may refer to things that happen in previous books, will stand alone.

The plot is very intricately woven around one scene.

When a goup of people are watching the same event it is amazing that the stories vary from person to person. Even the ever seeing eyes of a policewoman sees things differently from the average person.

    I couldn't put it down.

Eve may always investigate murder, but they aren't usually ones that she witnessed herself.

While watching a wonderful play written by Agatha Christie one of the actors is murdered. It only takes seconds for Eve to realize that the actors are no longer acting - though the rest of the audience takes a bit longer. It's astonishing that though she knows who actually killed Eve still must search for the murderer - the prop knife had been replaced with a real knife.

What is more astonishing to Eve is that even she believes that the actor deserved to die. He truly was a reprehensible person. No redeeming qualities. How can you narrow the pool when everyone hated the man enough to kill him?

    Be a witness

What a perfect setup for an Eve Dallas case. Roarke and Eve are attending the opening performance of the play "Witness for the Prosecution," a production financed by Roarke. He is fascinated watching Eve see her first play and try to unravel the plot. When the lead female performer in the play stabs the lead male performer as per script, Eve realizes the play is suddenly off script and that's real blood. She's become a witness to the crime, along with Dr. Mira who was also in the audience.

This is an interesting who dun nit given they know who killed the actor but Eve has to figure out who substituted the prop knife for the real thing. All of the suspects are playing a role and it's difficult to determine who's in character and who's for real. There is also a classic, memorable scene where Eve tries to do something romantic for Roarke for a change. That scene alone makes reading this story worthwhile...it is hilarious.

This is another solid entry in the In Death series.

A terrific story for the series!

Of all in the Death series, I do believe that "Witness In Death" is the best, especially when it comes to developing the characters Eve and Roarke. I'm looking forward to catching up on the books that I have missed.
If you like Nora Roberts then you'll like these books by her.

JD ROBB does it again and again!!!

It was a complete surprise when I found out that the author JD Robb was really Nora Roberts. Ms. Roberts romance stories are the best ever printed and yet she surpasses herself when she writes as JD Robb. The suspensful and thrilling mysteries that bring the character of Lt. Eve Dallas to life keep the reader captured until the very end. Whether you have read the first in this series or the very latest, you will not be disappointed. Lt. Dallas was the product of a miserable childhood and because of this she becomes a police officer in the futuristic city of New York in the year 2050. Each book finds Lt. Dallas, Rourke (her husband), her police team and some friends winding their way through yet another heart stopping murder mystery. In each book Eve continues to fight for those who 'can no longer stand for themselves' and stand she does!! Each book is complete unto itself and yet, as I did, I believe that you will find yourself seeking to read them all. To help you know the order they have been released, I have included them: Naked In Death, Glory In Death, Immortal In Death, Rapture In Death, Ceremony In Death, Vengeance In Death, Holiday In Death, Conspiracy In Death, Loyalty In Death, Witness In Death, Judgment In Death, Betrayal In Death, Seduction In Death, Reunion in Death, Purity in Death and Immitation In Death released in August, 2003. Enjoy them all -- you'll never be sorry.

    It's nice

I liked the book. the plot was very thought out. althought i admit it wasn't the best book she wrote, it was a good one to read. The plot doesn't always have to be a good person dying from a bad guy hand, but for the love of a child that creates enough passion for u to kill to keep that child safe

    AWESOME

The first one I ever read of JD Robb. I loved it. I have read almost everything by Nora before I went to these. I was lost one day in the bookstore looking for something to read, and I had read most of the ones by Nora on the shelf. I picked up this one and thought why not. I got it home and had it completed in the matter of hours. I had to run out and get more. I have not read them in order, but I don't think that matters.

    One star is too many

I am very disappointed in the write-by-numbers-paint-on-velvet quality of this highly acclaimed writer. Robb or Roberts has a knack for story-telling that would work for a bad music video or a serious car ad.

Not the best of Robb, but a great read!

I read the first J.D. Robb two years ago, and since then I have bought every installment of the series as soon as it came out, and I bought all the old ones too. Witness is not Robb's best, I believe that Rapture was better, but as usual, once I picked up the book it was almost impossible to put it down. The rest of the series is definately more exciting, but there is a sweetness is this one that fits in with the relationship between two people who have been married long enough to become dependent on each other, but not long enough to take each other for granted.

Excellent read - maybe not best in series

I have enjoyed watching the relationship between Eve and Roarke develop, and I wonder too, why don't they have a baby??? I also enjoy the 'old-fashioned' whodunit with all it's twists and turns. I literally couldn't put the book down until I figured out whodunit.
