DIANE DUANE is the author of more then twenty science fiction and fantasy novels, including the seven books in the Young Wizards series. She lives in rural Ireland.
Sent on vacation to her aunt's home in Ireland, teenage wizard Nita becomes entangled in a magic battle to save the country from the ghosts of its past.
She went out through the little concrete yard to the front of the house, where the front door was open, as Aunt Annie had told her it almost always was, except when everyone had gone to bed. Her aunt was in the big quarry-tiled kitchen making a cup of tea.
"So there you are!" she said. "Did you sleep well? Do you want a cuppa?"
"What? Oh, right. Yes, please," Nita said, and sat down in one of the chairs drawn up around the big blond wood table. One of Aunt Annie's cats, a black-and-white creature, jumped onto her lap: She had forgotten its name too, in the general blur of her arrival. "Hi there," she said to it, stroking it.
"Milk? Sugar?"
"Just sugar, please," Nita said. "Aunt Annie, who were those people out there with the horses?"
Her aunt looked at her. "People with the horses? All the staff have gone home. At least I thought they did."
"No, I heard them. The hooves were right outside my door, but when I looked, they'd gone away. Didn't take them long," she added.
Aunt Annie looked at her again as she came over and put Nita's teacup down. Her expression was rather different this time. "Oh," she said. "You mean the ghosts."
Nita stared.
"Welcome to Ireland," said her aunt.

I like how she based the wizardry around an irish culture, adding splashes of Nita, Darine, and Kit's wizardry in throught the book and tying it up at the ending with a small opening to where she was able to right her 5th book! I also would say the involment of the newer character's (Aunt annie, Johny, Doris, and Ronan) roles and actions toward the plot mixed in very well and explained who they were, what their purpose was, and even relationship throught the story!

Yet another tale from storyteller Diane Duane, this great story combines Irish and Celtic mythology and culture with her unique brand of magic to tell Nita's newest tale. With the mythical monster Balor threatening the wizards of Ireland, Nita and her aunt are called to work with other wizards to use the four treasures of Ireland to stop him. Kit, who was supposed to stay behind in the States, manages to loophole his way into joining them. With excitement, mythology, magic, friendship, and a slight romance for Nita, this book is another masterpiece.

It explores wizardry in a whole new way. It incorporated traditional Celtic mythology. Which I am all for. Couldn't have been better.

Yes, this is, in my opinion, the best book of the series. I loved the characters and the plot, that are different in this book but keeping to the theme. Loved It!

This book brings about the realities of being both a teenager and a wizard. Nita's parents aren't pleased with some of the choices she's made, so they decide to send her to Ireland for her to get a perspective of things. On the other hand, Nita also realizes that her life as a wizard means that she doesn't really get much time off. She's immediately called to handle a huge and ancient problem during her stay. This is Nita's most challenging and most adventurous mission to date. I can't wait to read the new ones.

I think this is the best book in the series so far, though I haven't read the newest one yet(A Wizards Holiday). In 'A Wizard Abroad' Nita's parents send her to visit her aunt in Ireland to have a break from her partner Kit. I hope I get the seventh book soon!

I was deeply disappointed in A Wizard Abroad. The first 3 books were EXCELLENT, and I praise Diane Duan for her good work, but this one just disappointed me. The only thing I found interesting in this book was the bard cat. A couple of pages in the middle of the book were good, but the rest was just plain BORING. But, of course, I didn't want the money I paid for it to go to waste so I read the ending. All in all, I expected much better in A Wizard Abroad, but was bored to death reading it.

During this book, Nita is sent to Ireland for the summer. While she is there she finds that there are ancient problems going on and she has to help. Though her parents meant this vacation to take Nita away from magic, they take her even closer.

This book was really great. It managed to succesfully combine ancient Irish legends with modern day characters, and was true to both worlds. I suggest that readers check the glossary for a defination of Gaelic terms and mythological references, if they are not familiar with the stories. Highly recommended!!!!!!
