Overview

We’re off to see the wizard! The magic of Scanimation meets the wonderful Wizard of Oz, bringing to life 10 memorable scenes from the movie that’s enchanted generations of viewers. It’s the gift book of the fall, and includes:

• Dorothy, the Tin Man, the Scarecrow, the Cowardly Lion, and Toto dancing down the Yellow Brick Road
• Dorothy’s farmhouse flying upward in a twister
• Miss Gulch, on her bicycle in the tornado, transforming into a witch on a broomstick
• The Lollipop Kids strutting from side to side
• The Scarecrow doing a wacky dance
• The Tin Man swaying from side to side; Dorothy and the Scarecrow flanking him as if to catch him
• The Wicked Witch of the West waving on a sky full of flying monkeys
• The Wicked Witch of the West melting
• The Great and Powerful Oz—and the man behind the curtain frantically pulling levers
• A close-up of Dorothy clicking her ruby slippers

Like Star Wars before it, The Wizard of Oz is a marriage of phenomenal Scanimation and one of the most beloved movies of all time. It also continues to be a vital icon: Warner’s 2009 release of the 70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector’s Edition won DVD critics’ and numerous other awards; Warner Brothers Kids just launched wizardofozkids.com; and in 2011, Andrew Lloyd Webber is staging The Wizard of Oz on Broadway. Now it’s found yet new life through Rufus Butler Seder With equal parts love and skill, he’s created 10 compelling Scanimations, taking us over the rainbow.

A glittering, ruby-red cover is the final, delectable touch.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
With a glittery, ruby-red cover, this addition to the bestselling Scanimation series features 10 scenes from The Wizard of Oz, including Dorothy's farmhouse spinning inside the cyclone; Dorothy meeting Scarecrow and the Tin Man; and the Wicked Witch melting. Quotations correspond to each of the iconic moments and, as in the film itself, when Dorothy and Toto arrive in Oz, the Scanimation scenes turn from black-and-white to color. Less a retelling than a reminder of key quotes and scenes, it's nonetheless a graceful pairing of nostalgia and novelty. All ages. (Sept.)
Children's Literature
A glittery red cover on this 7" by 5?" book with a recessed picture window in the center should get your attention for this Scanamation Book. "Scanamation" is the name given to the action created when a page of this book is raised and moved to the left, pulling one piece of a printed clear plastic sheet across another on the right side page to give the impression of movement. There is such a picture window in every right hand page of this book. On the first page Dorothy says, "We're not on the ground, Toto! We must be up inside the cyclone." Below that, in much smaller black ink are the words, "As a tornado blows through Kansas, Dorothy's farmhouse is lifted into the air, transporting her to the wondrous world of Oz." While the page is being opened, the moving picture in the window shows a house going up into the air; and, while the page is being moved over to the right, the house takes turns getting both larger and smaller. While Scanamation may be appropriate for watching different kinds of animals jump and run, it does not move a story forward. It was L. Frank Baum who did that for the Wizard of Oz. This book merely presents quasi-moments from the motion picture. Reviewer: Eleanor Heldrich
School Library Journal
Gr 1–3—A glittery red cover and 10 illustrations that change thanks to a "scanimation®" technique (meaning that they slide back and forth while being viewed through an acetate screen of vertical bars) provide a superficial glamour to this gift item that wears off after a few moments. The pictures are redrawn scenes from the film, and the facing text for each is likewise a line of dialogue ("I'll get you, my pretty, and your little dog, too!") plus a pedestrian action summary along the lines of "During the tornado, Dorothy watches through the window as her unfriendly neighbor, Miss Gulch, transforms into the Wicked Witch of the West." So closely spaced are the bars on the plastic screens that the silhouettes and other figures can hardly be made out from any angle, so even the ephemeral pleasures of making the pictures change by moving the card-stock pages back and forth are diluted. Consider, if you must, for display, but Robert Sabuda's pop-up version of the classic (Little Simon, 2001) is just one of many worthier options.—John Peters, formerly at New York Public Library

Beautifully captivating book - if you love the film you will love this

This is one of six books in the Rufus Butler Seder scanimation series along with Gallop, Kick, Swing, Waddle and Star Wars. I expect there will be other movie themed books as these are particularly entertaining. This scanimation book is one of my favourites as it contains brightly coloured scanimation pictures and quotes from the film. The pictures move by opening and closing the book carefully. A bit like the flicker books you used to get where you can move a man or a horse by flicking several pictures of the man/horse to get them to move but scanimation is alot classier. These books are great for children and adults who are young at heart. I would definitely recommend for children from 6 months to adult

Highly Recommended - a Must for Oz Fans!

I was amazed to see this beautiful book published and available at Barnes and Noble. Scanimation is a new form of animation - and without having to use a battery these pages come to life! For those that love "The Wizard of Oz" 1939 film with Judy Garland it will be something to treasure forever and ever with yourself, a friend, or even your children to pass down from generation to generation! It's a must for Oz fans and I highly recommend this book. It's a Oz treasure - just waiting to be opened. The cover is very glittery with beautiful red glitter all over and it shines brightly. Buy a copy of this book today!
