Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Jennifer Mitchell
How are wizards and witches different, and where did stories of them first originate? The belief in witches and wizards has been around since ancient times, and nearly all cultures in the world have some belief in them. Some cultures describe them as casting good and evil spells, while cackling over their cauldrons, but others view them as healers. Some Asian and African cultures believe these specially trained people can get rid of demons and talk to the dead. European witches were known for their healing powers, but during a few different time periods, people began to fear them and persecute them. Wizards, overall, have fared better than witches, and this book postulates as to why. Additionally, the book talks about famous witches and wizards, including some you might not expect. The book briefly explains alchemy. Finally, the author talks about some books that deal with witches and wizards. The author also provides titles of several movies that interested readers might wish to investigate. This short book is very engaging with short reading passages and colorful graphics. Gr 5–8—These books give inquisitive readers facts about different elements of fantasy traditions throughout the world. Accompanied by a few pictures, but mostly focused on text, the explanations and history behind well-known fantastical creatures such as witches, fairies, and monsters will provide satisfaction for readers who want to know more about these familiar characters from myth, fantasy, and folk and fairy tales. Brief and concise, the information only skims the surface of what's been written about these creatures, but extensive bibliographies and further reading provide curious readers with directions for where to go for more.—Sarah O'Holla, Village Community School, New York City
