Overview

When someone begins targeting members of an elite intelligence unit known as "the Prime Minister's private army" and all those who work with them, Sean Dillon has an idea of who it may be: an old nemesis out to destroy the unit once and for all.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
In bestseller Higgins's exciting 17th Sean Dillon thriller (after A Darker Place), Russian prime minister Vladimir Putin is behind a plot to kill Dillon and other members of the British prime minister's private intelligence army as payback for their being such a thorn in his side over the years. In London, Gen. Charles Ferguson, who's just left a late-night meeting of Commonwealth ministers, is walking toward his car when it explodes, killing his driver. In New York City, Maj. Harry Miller, who's in the U.S. to attend a U.N. meeting, goes for a stroll in Central Park, where he neatly turns the tables on a hired hit man. Extensive flashbacks explain how the attacks on each of the marked men evolved, with much space devoted to the chief assassin, Daniel Holley. Higgins provides a more cerebral story than usual, but he doesn't stint on action. Though most of the plot threads tie up nicely, the ending makes clear that readers will be seeing Holley again. Jack Higgins proves he remains one of the grandmasters of the international intrigue thriller

In Quoque, Long island a man waits at a pier for Blake Johnson, security adviser to the POTUS, to dock his vessel the Lively Jane; his mission is to kill the American. The British Prime Minister ordered top operatives Harry Miller and Sean Dillon to attend a U.N. gathering in which Russian Federation Prime Minister Vladimir Putin is speaking. The President wants Blake who will be at the gala to gauge the Russian delegation.

Harry takes a walk in Central Park but is also stalked and attacked. In London, General Charles Ferguson leaves a late-night meeting of ministers only to see his car with the driver inside explode. Although all roads lead to Moscow, none of the operatives realize Putin has hired the best assassin in the world Daniel Holley to eliminate the agents who have interfered with the Russian's plans for world domination; that is except Dillon who fears his most dreaded enemy has surfaced.

The latest Sean Dillon and company espionage thriller (see A Darker Place) is a super entry that moves on several subplots before converging for quite a climax. The story line focuses with back stories on how each chosen victim was targeted, stalked and attacked with an emphasis on Holly who ironically and fascinatingly holds the plot together; as opposed to Dillon and the other heroes. Jack Higgins proves he remains one of the grandmasters of the international intrigue thriller with this great entry.

    B-O-R-I-N-G !!!

Ho-hum story peopled by ho-hum characters. It was a chore to even finish the book. The "main character," Sean Dillon, was just a bit player. No more Dillon for me!!!!!!!

I love when the good guys win

I also enjoy when the Special Ops people set the politicians straight especially the way Mitch Rapp does it in Vince Flynns series.

    Jack Higgins is still awesome!

I have not read a Jack Higgins novel in many years, and the colorfully EXPLOSIVE cover caught my eye on the B&N table. So, after skimming a few opening pages, I bought it. I was NOT disappointed! I really enjoyed this book. The characters were new (to me - I see it is #17 of a series!), the plot unique (again, to me), and it certainly both entertained and kept me in suspense. I had gotten out of the habit of reading books (my hubby objects to my turning off the world - and him with it!), but I do believe I am "hooked" once again - thanks to this novel. I just might have to start reading the series with #1! Can't wait to do so!

Higgins mixes it up a bit

Jack Higgins' A Wolf at the Door kept me reading from cover to cover. This book is a little different from the Higgins usual. The a large part of the story is told from the antagonists' viewpoint, with Sean Dillon & Co. seemingly as background players. While somewhat disappointing, this made the plot less monotonous, as A Wolf at the Door concludes the story of Sean Dillon #16, A Darker Place. Higgins does a good job telling the problems of each antagonist, and weaving the threads back together for a satisfying finish.

    Always good Jack Higgins

The book was as always a good Jack Higgins book. However, it really can't be considered a Sean Dillon series as he really isn't involved. I would love to see another Sean Dillon book with the character having more of a role.

The Wolf at the door is your greatest Danger and not only in Winter. (Russian Proverb)

Jack Higgins introduces Daniel Holly, a very dangerous man, a terrorist for hire. He almost succeeds (with the help of the IRA) in eliminating ten British and American special agents. The whole book is a cat and mouse game, with an ironic and satisfying conclusion.

Jack Higgins fans will love it

I am a huge Jack Higgins fan and try to read everything he writes. Thus, when I saw this latest book had been released, I bought it. It is full of the usual things that make Jack Higgins' books so exciting...involved plot, well-drawn characters, lots of action. This tale, while enjoyable, was a bit confusing. The story begins in the middle and then goes back and "fills in the blanks." I am not really a fan of this type of story-telling, because too many things need to remembered to make sense and it is easy for some details to "fall through the cracks." While Higgins does a good job of filling in the "back story" I think that the tale would have been better, and less confusing, if he'd just started at the beginning and brought it forward. Just my opinion. I did enjoy the book and will go back and re-read it again when I have read all my new acquisitions and am looking for something to pass the time.

    WHERE'S SEAN?

The main problem is too little Dillon. He is not present for the majority of the book. It's like "24" without Jack Bauer.

Not Up to Higgins's Usual Standards, But a Good Read

This book has the most contrived plot Higgins has created. The usual characters are given short shrift and the new characters are neither strong enough nor interesting enough to carry the story. Readers expect more action and planning with Sean Dillon and his gang and this book falls short.

Wait for the paperback...it's an entertaining read but not compelling and, frankly a little slow and contrived in places..
