Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Rita Monteiro
In a creepy corner of Transylmania, meet impudent Talbot, the Werewolf Boy and his gang of weird classmates. Superbly drawn and characterized, they bear an uncanny resemblance to their adult demonic personalities: Frankenstein, Dracula, The Invisible Boy and The Phantom of the Opera. Cleverly humanized as a lively bunch of school-boys, they immediately win and keep the attention of their audience. The focus is on a bugbear common to all students, doing school homework on time. They are disciplined promptly if they do not complete homework assigned by strict teachers. Mr. Lugosi bluntly tells Talbot that he is lazy and irresponsible. Talbot faces a tough ultimatum: write a 20 page report on The History of Transylmania, or remain behind while his friends move up to the next class. Talbot opens the book, but escapes into a dream adventure, dragging all his Mighty Monster friends with him on a dangerous lark. Faced with extinction, Talbot chooses the safety of his friends, in preference to his love of escaping unpleasant tasks. Awaking from the daydream, he thanks his teacher for a second chance to redeem himself. A script of skillfully constructed actions maintains the interest of the young reader in an abstract idea: to develop character, we must learn to think of the consequences of our actions on others, as well as ourselves. Discussion Questions develop this thought. Writing Prompts encourage creative writing, abilities. A glossary enriches the reader's vocabulary. As the Holiday Season begins soon with Halloween, Mighty Monsters of their very nature offer rich possibilities to enliven classroom social events and teaching on the art of debate and essay writing. A section showing how the Magic of Genies continues to be a source of creative and popular stories, films and TV shows, will encourage still further reading and research. Discover the other twelve tales of terror each featuring a "Mighty Mighty Monster." The fun does not stop here. Go to www.capstonekids.com. Reviewer: Rita Monteiro
