Meet the Author

Mary is an offspring of the counter-culture mind-blown hippie movement that sprung up north of the Bay Area after the sixties. She roamed through the landscape with all of the other half-feral, half-naked, half-educated children running wild in the hills and forests of Northern California, like Titania’s fairies roamed through the Grecian wood or Wendy’s lost boys roamed through Neverland, dancing through buttercups, oak leaves, and wild strawberries.

She continued to roam as she grew older, through Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas, finally landing in San Francisco where she currently resides with three pesky roommates and two mellow cats, no wait switch that.

She has taken her love of adventure and turned it to the pen to write about all the strange, fabulous, and unexpected in this world.

    Strange

From the point of view of the wolf, a little weird, but interesting.

    Not Perfect, But Worth Reading

I think I understand what Moore is trying to do in "Wolfman". It is not easy to convey the austere, primal impulses of a deranged mind. I applaud her for taking on such a challenge. She chose the correct format. "Wolfman" is labeled a short story in the overview, but I believe it is actually a prose poem that conveys a complete narrative. Really, I believe it is the best format for this challenge because it allowed Moore to use words in the most economic fashion, sparse but powerful. I also applaud her for taking on the challenge of re-envisioning such a well known tale. Little Red Riding Hood was originally a very short, dark, violent tale. Moore has captured that spirit very well while giving it her own voice and unique twist. Unfortunately, "Wolfman" falls short because the end feels violent for violence's sake. It forms a juxtaposition with the plea for sympathy for the beast. The plea falls like dead weight because I am left viewing the wolf as a fell monster, as he has been throughout Little Red Riding Hood's literary history. If that was not Moore's intent, then she fell short of meeting all of the terms of the challenge. That said, I am willing to retain the story in my collection and read it again later. I sometimes form different opinions upon rereading a story.
