Wolf's Gambit Must Read for Thrillers with Werewolves

Gagliani never disappoints with his werewolf thriller. The story is clever and keeps you guessing to the very end. It is one of those books that was difficult to put down. If you have not read one of his Lupo novels, you are in for a treat and will be hooked.

    I Also Recommend:

Howling good time with Nick Lupo

Werewolves don't seem to get enough love in the horror genre with all the vampires and zombies out there but Wolf's Gambit gets some love and then some. :) I highly recommend picking up the previous novel by the author; Wolf's Trap because it's a great story and Wolf's Gambit references events and characters from it which help tie in and enhance the overall ongoing story. The author gives some details about previous events so not completely lost if read as a stand alone novel. The story follows Nick Lupo as he heads out for his monthly trip to the woods where some brutal killings have started to take place. Lupo is a good lead with some hang ups about his "condition" but ultimately learns to live and control them which make for an interesting combination. There are some nice nods to Lupo's childhood and his progression with his other side. The narrative is well done by providing a multi character style. This allows almost each character a chance as narrator which gives you great insight into players both good and evil. It helps you to see the surroundings and story itself in many different views/perspectives. The main plot is well done by painting a clear picture as to everyone's roles and place but not the overall motive which is extremely well done at the end with surprising twist. Not going to ruin anything but I was almost certain by the end and the author threw a nice curve ball which fit nicely and made sense. One or two very subtle hints are dropped but definitely didn't see the twist coming. Violence/gore is gritty and descriptive and doesn't skip on the messy details. Same can be said about the sex aspect which may seem over the top to some but if you ever read the excellent author, Richard Laymon, then you should be prepared. The pace flowed nicely by being broken up by different narratives/angles and each character fits in nicely. The end also seems to promise a very intriguing sequel. Overall; great take on werewolf story/legend in present day with enough sex, violence and fur to satisfy the horror genre aficionado.

    Horrid book!

When you have to resort to deviant, vile, perverted, explicitedly-worded, perverted sexual torture to write a book----I call that gutter literature! When I got to that part---the book was 'history.'

    Great Story!

This book was very satisfying with a great plot and good characters. There were some very gross sex scenes in it, but it would be easy to skim over that. It's bloody and gory, but it's a horror novel, so that's expected. Now I want to go out and get the sequel.
