Children's Literature - Lisa Colozza Cocca
Readers will be drawn into this title by the photograph of the wolf on the front cover. This book is part of the "North American Animals" series. Each title in the series covers the habitat, physical appearance, diet, and reproduction and birth of a North American animal. In addition, the books cover the risks to the animal's welfare in the wild. In this title readers learn about wolves. Along with the basics, readers learn how wolves' coats act as camouflage in the wild. The book includes vocabulary beyond the reach of most beginning readers and the glossary is well above this reading range. Each book in the series is approximately 200 words in length and has been assigned a grade 1 reading level. Each book also includes small maps and full color photographs on the recto pages, some of which bleed across the page onto the verso page. The photographs in this title closely support the text. Back matter includes a glossary, suggestions for further reading and research, and an index. Although the book is unlikely to work as independent reading for most students in the target range, it is well suited for shared or group reading. The photographs will hold the attention of a young audience and the generous 9x12 format makes the book easy to share with even a full class. The information is given by the spoonful and the layout provides many natural places for the adult reader to pause and discuss the unfamiliar vocabulary or concepts. As shared reading, the book is a worthy addition to any collection of animal books. Reviewer: Lisa Colozza Cocca
