Overview

Colin McGinty's grandfather, a famous artist, is best known for his haunting portrait Woman in Red, which happens to be of Alice Kessler's grandmother. In a tale that weaves the past with the present, we come to know the story behind the portrait, of a forbidden wartime romance between William McGinty and Eleanor Styles, and a deadly secret---one that is about to be unburied, as the ghost of an enemy from long ago surfaces in the form of Colin's grandson.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
In this page-turning novel, Alice Kessler, the married mother of two sons, is living on the fictional Grays Island, in the Pacific Northwest, when her eight-year-old son is run over while riding his bike. Alice is convinced the driver, Owen White, was drunk-though her husband, Randy, is not. Neither is the court system. So, on the day Alice loses her wrongful death lawsuit, she runs Owen down in the courthouse parking lot, crippling but not killing him. Alice serves nine years and returns to the island near-broke and hoping to reunite with her surviving son, Jeremy, now 16. (Her husband, Randy, has divorced her.) At the same time, Colin McGinty, an ex-Manhattan prosecutor, has returned to his dead artist grandfather's island house after losing his wife in 9/11. Alice and Colin's fates become bound with a little help from Colin's inherited border collie and, more concretely, a portrait of Alice's grandmother. Cutting between WWII-era depictions of the lives of Colin's and Alice's grandparents and the melodramatic present (including Alice's son being accused of rape and Owen White's machinations as island mayor), haute-romance veteran Goudge (Immediate Family; Wish Come True; etc.) unspools a predictable yet satisfying tale of survival and redemption. Good Book

A great book for anyone that is interested in books that flip-flop back and forth between the past and the present, having the 2 story lines playing with each other and coming together at the end really made the book great...

    Can't put it down

This is the first time that I've a read a book by this author and I was impressed by the way the characters were presented and with the story line. Definitely, will recommend this book.

    I Also Recommend:

    I LOVE this book....

I am a little biased, I guess, as Eileen Goudge is one of my all-time favorite authors. However, this was the first novel of hers that I ever read, and that may be part of the reason that I love her so much! The book was just basically fantastic all-around! The characters were unique and dynamic and easy to relate to. It is a story full of emotion and passion and loyalty mixed in with hardship and suffering, told in the most engrossing way possible. I could not put this book down, period, because I was so desperate to be a part of the story that I absolutely did not want to break away from it, even for a second. It was that good. Really! I guess it's not necessarily a must-read for everyone, but if you are reading the description and thinking that it might be something you would enjoy, I would say -- definitely give it a shot!

    Well written novel.

I liked the characters. I was anxious to read what happened next. I only give books I think are good to my friends and I gave this to one right away. I like to discuss books I read with someone else who has similar reading tastes as mine but by the time they get around to read it I've gotten into another book.

I have become a big fan of Eileen Goudge's books and this was another well-written novel that I didn't want to put down.

The setting of WOMAN IN RED was described so well that you could just picture the town, wooded areas and coastline as you were reading it. As in Ms. Goudge's GARDEN of LIES and THORNS OF TRUTH, the characters become quite real to you and you almost hate to see the end of the book.

    I Also Recommend:

    It colored my reading time.

This was a little different story line and the characters were interesting. It certainly was a page turner for the story itself. Even though I would not classify this a thriller, there were some very surprising twists and turns. I will definitely re-read this book in the next couple years.

    Terrific read

I was drawn to this paperback by the cover and the title and of course, the author, as I have read other books written by Eileen Goudge that are very good. I couldn't put this one down and found myself grabbing it in between chores and when I took a work break to read more. I was sorry when it ended! Now that's a defining moment for a book. I want to buy it on tape for my dear friend who is blind but from what I see, it is not yet available.

    A reviewer

This novel covers two time periods -- the present day and 1943. The story is well constructed, the characters are extremely memorable and the ending makes you wish there was more. This is a definite must-read!!

A well written strong character driven family drama

Nine years ago in Bell Harbor, Alice Kessler filed a wrongful death law suit in civil court against wealthy Owen White, but loses though he was drunk when he ran over and killed her son. After losing she hits the accelerator hitting Owen while her other son seven years old Jeremy sits hysterically in the passenger seat.------------- In the present former Manhattan DA, widower Colin McGinty arrives in Bell Harbor to decide what to do with his inheritance from his grandfather William, a renowned artist estranged from his wife and son, Colin¿s grandmother and father respectively. After nine years in jail, Alice comes home. Jeremy feels that his mom was not there when he needed her as she only thought of her dead son.--------------- Colin and Alice met when they first arrived on the island just a few days ago. They each tell their tale of woe and he invites Alice to come to his home to see the portrait William made of her Nana that no one in her family has ever seen before. Meanwhile at a party, Jeremy has sex with Carrie Ann Flager who passes out afterward. The next day Carrie Ann. claims he raped her. Alice asks Colin to be Jeremy¿s lawyer. He agrees though he tells her she would be better off with someone else.------------------ Eileen Gouge easily moves between the present and 1942 as both casts are solid and believable, especially the ¿villain¿, wheelchair bound Own who is treated as a person with regrets. The final scene is a fantastic ending, perhaps the best so far this year. Though the collapse of a key player seems too over the top, readers will appreciate this well written strong character driven family drama.-------------- Harriet Klausner
