Library Journal - Library Journal
Booth, a rural physician from New South Wales, offers a compact introduction to being lesbian in Australia that primarily addresses those without prior knowledge of gay life, including lesbians, friends, and helpers such as physicians. She covers general female sexual matters (self-knowledge, masturbation, orgasm), lesbian-related sexuality (sex between women, sexual health, sexual difficulties), and such concerns as coming out, meeting people, coping with one's youth or age, and living with problems like disability and ethnic discrimination. She concludes with a history of lesbian visibility in Australia. Her astute, simply written guide covers a wide variety of attitudes and behaviors exemplified by quotations from the women she interviewed. The many Australian references make this book a little gem for Down Under collections but less useful for U.S. libraries generally. Recommended for large GLBT collections with an international focus; no recent U.S. book is quite equivalent, but smaller public libraries may rely on Felice Newman's The Whole Lesbian Sex Book and The New Our Right to Love: A Lesbian Resource Book, edited by Ginny Vida.-Martha Cornog, Philadelphia Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
