Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 5-8 In Tamora Pierce's The Woman Who Rides Like a Man (Random, pap. 1990), the third volume in the Song of the Lioness quartet, Alanna is now an 18-year-old knight who, after being taken captive, becomes an integral member of the nomadic Bloody Hawk tribe. This romance novel brings the heroine's magical, physical, and intellectual strengths to the fore, as she continues to grapple with her own emotional conflicts regarding love and loyalties. Actress Trini Alvarado gives a performance consistent with her previous narrations in this series. She projects a youthful, but strong character for Alanna; this is her outstanding strength. She sets a consistent pace and rhythm to the story, giving listeners time to distinguish among a multitude of characters introduced in the beginning. Other voices, such as Ibn Nazzir, the evil shaman, and Halef Seif, the head tribesman, sound like parodies of Middle Eastern or Asian characters one might hear on Disney cartoons. They vacillate between sounding Arabic and Asian, and never gel into giving listeners a solid geographical image for this fictional tribe. While her voice carries an intermittent husky quality, the similarities in tone between Alanna and Prince Jonathan may be confusing at times. It should be noted that although the story is an enjoyable adventure for upper elementary age students and older, the text includes specific references to the physical relationship between Alanna and Jonathan and mentions her lack of virginity.-Tina Hudak, St. Bernard's School, Riverdale, MD Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.

Gr 7-9 The third in the ``Song of the Lioness'' series finds the title heroine, Alanna; her psychic cat, Faithful; and the older man-at-arms, Coram, among the desert tribes of the Bazhir. Here Alanna breaks with tradition by training three gifted youthstwo of them girlsas shamans. She also sets out to tame the evil in a substitute crystal sword that she suspects belonged to her enemy, Roger, whom she killed in Book Two. Her ambitious brother, sorcerer Thom, is experimenting with raising the deadand new trouble brews. Meanwhile, she has a misunderstanding with Prince Jonathan, her lover who has assumed their betrothal and a romantic reunion with George, King of Thieves. A coming-of-age fantasy-adventure that can be read by itself, thanks to smooth backgrounding, and one that leaves readers wanting to read further in either direction. Ruth M. Woman who rides like a man

In book three of the Song of the Lioness series, Alanna has just received her Knight's shield and is anxious to be off on an adventure of her own making. Accompanied by the steady Coram, who trained her as a young page, Alanna feels ready for any eventuality. Heading southward, Alanna and Coram are attacked by murderous desert dwellers and are eventually rescued by the equally enigmatic Bazhir people who offer her two options: fight one of their own warriors and join the tribe or be killed. Wisely, Alanna fights and awes group with her fighting skills and compassion - except for a notable few members of the Bloody Hawk tribe. Despite all the tradition and prejudice against women, Alanna is slowing welcomed by the group, eventually becoming the tribe's newest shaman and training three youngsters to carry on her in place.

Even though she has escaped the confines of palace life, Alanna is confronted with the reality of determining her relationship with Prince Jonathan while the ever comforting presence of George, the King of the Thieves, silently keeps watch over her. All of Alanna's friends are wonderful but George has always been a standout for me. This book finally showed a little more personality in Jonathan and, for good or bad, made for a more interesting character.

Wherever she goes, Alanna draws attention. It's probably the whole red hair, purple eyes, warrior maiden thing she has going on but it really works for her. I'd probably stop in my tracks if she crossed my way too. That said, I love how she is constantly faced with difficult challenges where there really is no easy answer. Alanna faces each situation with maturity and intelligence that I can't help but admire. But above all, she is loyal to her friends and to the vows she made as a knight and it shows in everything she does. I am so enjoying this series and I can't wait to see what is up next for Alanna in the concluding volume, Lioness Rampant.

    Love this series

I have loved this series ever since I was in jr. high. I borrowed them from a friend at the time, but I'm finally glad to have my own set. I don't like the new cover art, and that's what BAM only sells now. It's hard to find this cover anymore in stores, unless it's used. So I was very glad I was still able to get these online through B&N.

To: the people who put the editoral reviews on here

You know that some of us are actually READING the book, and hearing about how the person on tape/CD narrates SOOO well doesn't help us decide whether to buy the book, right?

    Good

I was a little disappointed that Jonathan and George weren't in this one more, but I still liked it the same as the others. I think because I'm listening to the audio of these (and therefor don't have a visual of when I'm nearing the end) I always feel like they end a little abruptly. This one in particular was a little less eventful than the other books in the series, but it also made sense for Alanna to have some down time.

    Rushed and Not Realistic

The first book was a great piece to read but this just flunked. It felt like the book was rushing since about 2 years of her life was crowded into 1 chapter. Issues like sex, kissing, and mainly all the big events in a life in this book felt like it wasn't detailed enough. I know it's a teen novel but give a break! Most children know what sex is by the time they reach 3rd grade.

I would reccomend reading the 'Song of the Lioness' quartet to anybody who has a taste for adventure, fantasy, or even romance. I love the way Pierce sets the pace and the way she describes the characters. Alanna is a good role model for anyone who has wanted to try something new. She displays great courage and wit, and a few jokes are spun into the story. I fancy myself I writer, and I know a good book when I read one. This is a great book. Happy reading! -Written by an eleven-year-old

Sorry to break the mood here

These books were terrible. They were blunt, and each book felt like the author was trying to rush through them. Alanna is barely likeable, and the romantic plotlines, pathetic and generic. Ahh the prince and the theiflord. What a winning and original combination! they did nothing for my imagination and actually put me in a bad mood. The plotline is see through and you end up getting tired of the characters. Sex is dealt with to lightly. im not saying she sleeps around or anything, its just the issue needs to be stressed. this last one i could barely get through, it felt like work!! im not reading the last one, because im so tired of these boring books. The authors writting is also a turn off. Shes not good. While i was reading it i could insert details and sentences that would make it better! your not supposed to do that while your reading! okay im done ranting. I do not recommend these books to anyone.

    HORRAY FOR TAMORA PIERCE!!!!!

This book is another great installment in Pierce's SONG OF THE LIONESS. Though this one is not based in Corus, like the first two, it is just as good. It gets much more into the magical qualities that people in Tortall posses, but there is still plenty of fighting and romance. It's an excellent adventure, you should all read it, but read the other two books first!

    A Good Book

This book was my least favorite of the series, although I liked it very much. Some of it was confusing, like her relationships with Jon and George. I feel that one of them, after deciding he didn't love Alanna, moved on so quickly.

    loved the whole series

i actually read In the Hands of the Goddess first (found it in a library's dusty shelves) and i was HOOKED. imagine my reaction when i discovered the entire series!! the first and second books were marvelous. this book was great too, but i wasnt interested in her shaman occupation. however, the fourth book made up for it and u discovered that this book was definitely needed to transition from book 2 to 4. LOVED THE ENTIRE SERIES!
