All Music Guide - Stephen Eddins
On the page, it's difficult to see what in the poetry of Judith Wright inspires the fierce affection that the composers represented here profess, but in these musical settings, when declaimed lyrically and free from their metric conventionality, her poems do in fact take on powerful life. Each of the composers has created songs that could easily stand with the finest contemporary American and English vocal music. Margaret Sutherland 1897-1984 emerges as a significant and original talent based on her "Six Australian Songs for voice and piano" and "The world and the child, for voice and string trio." On the page, it's difficult to see what in the poetry of Judith Wright inspires the fierce affection that the composers represented here profess, but in these musical settings, when declaimed lyrically and free from their metric conventionality, her poems do in fact take on powerful life. Each of the composers has created songs that could easily stand with the finest contemporary American and English vocal music. Margaret Sutherland 1897-1984 emerges as a significant and original talent based on her "Six Australian Songs for voice and piano" and "The world and the child, for voice and string trio." Sutherland has an extraordinary knack for text setting; she takes the rhythmic regularity of Wright's words, which looks so square on paper, and gives it lyric freedom. Her settings are utterly unsentimental and her accompaniments are Spartan, but her economy gets at the essence of the poetry and is remarkably expressive. Ross Edwards, one of Australia's most prominent composers, has made a version for voice and piano of a Wright poem he used in his second symphony. His rhapsodic setting is also successful in using the poetry as the basis for an emotionally probing piece. The songs by Richard Mills and Ian Munro are musically more conventional, but are no less effective in their direct and clear-eyed expressivity. Moya Henderson's charming setting of "Woman's Song for three women's voices" begins with a memorable folk-like melody, which in canon creates a shimmering contrapuntal web. Mezzo-soprano Elizabeth Campbell sings with purity and strength and utter conviction, and she is ably accompanied by pianist and composer Ian Munro.
