Wombat tries out for the annual Nativity play and wins the role of Jesus. In a starred review of this playful story, PW said, "Its pleasures are infectious." Ages 4-8. (Oct.) Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.
Children's Literature - Jan Lieberman
A special treat for Christmas is Wombat Divine. At last Wombat is old enough to audition for the Nativity play. He tries out for each part but loses to someone who is perfect. Wombat is either too heavy, too short, too sleepy, or too short sighted. Koala, Kangaroo, Platypus and the others all sympathize with a dejected Wombat until the perfect part is found... the Baby Jesus and guess what? He is Divine! Argent's animals are full of personality and energy. This is a true picture book with a simple story line and pictures that expand on and enrich the test. Brava to Mem and Kelly!

My family has been great fans of Mem Fox for many years. My daughter had a baby in September and I am reconstructing the home library she had. This was a favorite holiday book for her and for her classmates. It is sweet and meaningful on many levels.

It was a cute story. Definitely not worth a 5 star but it was cute and I would read it once a year around Christmas to my kids but not interesting enough to want to read it over and over again, but it was cute and sweet.

I first fell in love with this delightful book on a recent visit to Australia. So much so, that I brought back seven copies as gifts! Author, Mem Fox, has written a classic tale of wanting to be accepted and contribute/belong to the group. A national department store in Australia featured Wombat Devine in their 2006 Holdiay window displays with animated characters who told the story....reminiscent of Macy's Holiday window displays. Combines familiar story with animals from Australia to play the story's characters...kangaroos, koalas and others.

Wombat devine is an allegorical story of a simple child who cannot quite do what is required . But in the end takes the central role in a Christmas play and shows that no matter who or what we are we are important and loved.
