Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
In this work, originally a doctoral dissertation written in the 1970s, Camhi asserts that, similar to the campaign against the Equal Rights Amendment, some of the suffragists' worst enemies were women's antisuffrage organizations. She provides a thorough analysis of the "Antis," including their theories, tactics, and why they were ultimately unsuccessful. An entire chapter is devoted to Ida Tarbell, one of the best-known antisuffragists, and a biographical supplement provides information on others. The Antis were primarily made up of middle-to upper-middle-class women who saw women as guardians of the home and family while men took care of public life. Camhi's book is an important addition to academic and large public libraries.-Kathryn Moore Crowe, Univ. of North Carolina at Greensboro Lib.
Booknews
A study of nationwide anti-women's suffrage movements, analyzing the "antis'" ideology and strategies, and offering theories on the contradictory positions women took in regard to formal political power. Includes a profile of noted anti-suffragist, Ida Tarbell, whose emancipated lifestyle belied her anti-suffragist rhetoric. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
