Overview

Social reforms aimed at changing the social, political, or economic status of women in India were important both to British colonial rule and to nascent nationalist movements. The debates that began then over laws governing such practices as widow immolation, widow remarriage, and child marriage, as well as those governing marriage and property within different religious communities (Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Sikh), continued to exert profound influence on Indian society and politics throughout the twentieth century. In this impressive collection, eminent historians Tanika Sarkar and Sumit Sarkar bring together some of the most important scholarly articles and primary source documents from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, providing an introduction to key issues and a critique of how class, community, gender, and other dimensions have or have not been addressed in standard textbook treatments of Indian national history.
