Following four decades of research, Cosman presents a detailed treatment of working women in Medieval Europe. During her study of primary and secondary source materials, Cosman discovered that medieval women had an active role in the working world, including participation in the fields of medicine, literature, politics and management, crafts, trades, and agriculture as well as in illicit activities such as prostitution and thievery. In her text, the author provides an overview of each profession and biographies of specific women in the field, such as physician Trotula of Salerno and Christine De Pizan, a writer. Extensive captions accompany each primary source illustration, providing an explanation of the illustration and medieval customs. The quality of the research and the abundance of illustrations make this work an excellent choice for schools reaching grades nine through twelve and for public libraries that serve high school and college students. The author provides a valuable list of notes and references for those interested in further research. Unfortunately, Cosman does not follow a standard citation format, such as MLA style. The reader must read her explanation of the source note format to link to the section in the text. This slight criticism aside, libraries might want to purchase this volume for their circulating collection but for their reference collections if there is a high demand for medieval research. Index.
