First of all, let me say I'm a HUGE fan of Jakob Dylan. His last album, "Seeing Things," was absolutely breathtaking. It was soulful, soothing, happy, and wonderful. I was hoping for much of the same thing with this album. My first issue is that his voice always seems to be in the background--the quality is horrible compared to the last album--his voice, the whole point of his music and storytelling, isn't front and center. Then, almost all of the songs on the CD are in a minor key--sad--depressing--definitely not soothing, at least not to me. I'm sorry Jakob, I'll try again next album, but I just wasn't happy with this one.

...T-Bone Burnett and Jakob Dylan, with amazing musicians - including Marc Ribot and Neko Case, and, of course, T-Bone - and amazing orchestration. It's lush, it's lyrical, in places it's bar-room raucous. You can't go wrong with this CD. The liner notes include the musicians and back-up vocalists as well as the lyrics, always a plus, in my opinion.

I'VE GIVEN THIS CD AWAY TO 7 DIFFERENT FOLKS THAT IS HOW MUCH I LOVE IT AND WANT TO SHARE IT WITH OTHERS. IT ISN'T A DANCE CD. HE IS PROFOUND AND ADDICTING IN HIS ARRANGEMENTS AND LYRICS. NEKO CASE WHO SINGS ON THE CD IS ALSO ENCHANTING. BUY IT - YOU WON'T REGRET IT. IT'S MY FAVORITE CD OF 2010.

Continuing in the subdued, stripped-down direction he began with his 2008 solo debut Seeing Things, Jakob Dylan nevertheless achieves a cinematic resonance on his second record, 2010's Women + Country. Surely, part of this is down to Dylan swapping Rick Rubin, who has made starkness almost a fetish, for the analog impressionism of T-Bone Burnett, who previously worked with the singer/songwriter on the Wallflowers 1996 breakthrough album Bringing Down the Horse.
