Overview

Geneen Roth’s 1991 bestseller, When Food Is Love , spoke to a wide audience—including Oprah Winfrey, who embraced Roth’s empowering message. Since then, Roth has taken the sum total of her experience and combined it with spirituality, psychology, and self-awareness to explain women’s true hunger in Women, Food, and God . .

Roth’s approach to eating is the same as any addiction—it is an activity to avoid feeling emotions. From the first page, readers will be struck by Roth’s intelligence, humor, and sensitivity, as she traces the path of overeating from its subtle beginning through its logical end. Whether the drug is booze or brownies, the problem is the same: opting out of life. Roth’s premier advice is eat anything you want . She powerfully argues for personal investigation and urges readers to pay attention to what they truly need—and it usually cannot be found in a supermarket. She provides seven basic guidelines for eating (the most important is to never diet) and shares reassuring, practical advice that has over the years helped thousands of women who have attended her highly successful seminars and workshops..

Truly a thinking woman’s guide to eating—and an anti-diet book— women everywhere will find insights and revelations on every page. .

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
While "God" is in the title of this latest work by best-selling author Roth (When Food Is Love), she touches only lightly on religion, focusing instead on why some people use food to mask their emotions. Overeating numbs feelings and erases unpleasant life experiences, Roth says; eating ends up being about bloating and indigestion, not about enjoying food. Through a series of inquiries, Roth helps overeaters find the underlying reasons for using food as an emotional buffer. Roth also provides seven basic guidelines for eating (which do not include counting calories) and other therapeutic self-help tools. Whether the trap is eating brownies or shopping in excess, Roth's advice could be applied to any addiction. VERDICT This is an excellent book for anyone tired of quick-fix diets. Having experienced the ups and downs of emotional eating herself, Roth offers readers genuine and heartfelt advice. [See Prepub Alert, LJ 11/1/09.]—Phyllis Goodman, West Chester P.L., OH

    Thought-provoking and empowering

"To say that Geneen Roth explores the complex relationship that women have with food, themselves and their spirituality is accurate, but "Women Food And God" is so much more. Although there does not seem to be any revolutionary information presented here, Ms. Roth's compelling writing and insight will have the reader underlining phrases and turning down pages to remember and wondering why such basic and logical ideas have taken so long to be understood. The author shares her own struggle with weight loss and her ability to once and for all step off the diet merry-go-round. Her personal journey and the guidelines that she teaches in her seminars unfold chapter by chapter, giving the reader time to reflect. This book is thought-provoking and empowering, and is about much more than our relationship with food. I did feel that the spirituality/God connection received too little attention, but perhaps that's a subject for another book."

Excellent! Best Book Dealing with Food Issues.

I have read numerous books dealing with overeating; and this is the first one that struck home with me. Roth captures the essence of many of my problems. While I don't agree with all she says, I am always amazed how she puts into words what affects me the most. Definitely read it! My therapist agrees that it is a wonderful book.

    This was it!

This book helped me lose over 70 pounds, most of it without dieting. It was a slow process so it didn't happen over night. Roth helped me realize it was never about the food. Exercise and calorie restriction became effortless as the puzzle began solving itself. I felt empowered for the first time in my life and was finally able to see myself for who I was, taking responsibility for that self. I also sent strong boundary signals toward others that sought control.

I would definatly recommend this book but warn that its not a diet book with specific fixes. It's more about seeing ourselves through how we eat. It's also not a book Christians might view as religious. God represents more of an internal struggle than an abstract deity. I believe Roth to be Jewish.

    more from this reviewer

    recommended

This book has a good thesis and many notable passages. Ms Roth has identified what I, too, found to be the key to approaching weight and self esteem issues. She identifies the theme, but each individual must make it his or her own to address personal issues.

    Very disappointed!

Very strange and totally not what I hoped this book would be. Nothing inspiring and almost an insult to the christian woman. Too bad, the title really reels you in. Don't waste your time and money on this one.

    Misleading Title

I had heard and seen this book recommended many times, yet the title was misleading because I did NOT want to read a book about God and Food. I also though that she was coming from the place of people making food their God, neither of which applied to me.

Only thing stopping me now is I need ebook format please!

    Enjoyable

I listened to this on a drive last Sunday. I had heard about it on Oprah. I have been dieting for years and this really makes senses. This past week I was faced with unlimited food. I ate what I wanted and stopped when I was full. No overeating for me and never felt deprived.
