Children's Literature - Meredith Kiger
One of eleven in the “Major Women in Science” series, this edition focuses on nine women who have had outstanding careers in medicine by either being one of the first women in their field and/or making significant contributions to their field of medicine. A two-page introduction discusses the possibilities of a career in science and briefly names some of the fields and what they mean. It also lists the goals of this series and provides additional resources to learn more. The first chapter discusses the kinds of education and the personal qualities that make a successful doctor. The nine women that are featured include a neurologist, a geneticist, a physicist, a pathologist, an internist, a surgeon, a public health physician, a microbiologist, and an alternative medicine practitioner. Each doctor’s life is profiled from the early beginnings, her education, and her specific contributions to her field. Color photos, usually of the doctor profiled, enhance the features. A follow up chapter on “opportunities for women today in the field of medicine” further encourage young readers to consider a career in science. Boxed information, words to know, and sources for additional study are provided in each chapter. An index is included. Reviewer: Meredith Kiger, Ph.D.; Ages 9 to 13.
