The book covers the history and sources of Islamic law, its legal interpretation, the arguments for a legal methodology of reform, and a comparative perspective of current Muslim family law. Esposito, who teaches at Georgetown U., was assisted in this edition by one of his PhD candidates, Natana J. DeLong-Bas.

This book provided a very comprehensive resource for the study of Women's rights as it pertains to Muslim societies. It detailed the development of family law in various Muslim societies as it progressed through history and into the modern day. Very useful for students, teachers, and scholars!
