About the Author

Frances Backhouse is a full-time professional writer with a passion for history. Her first book, Women of the Klondike (Whitecap, 1995), has become a Northern classic and was adapted for stage and performed by Theatre Erindale (University of Toronto) in November 2007. She is also the author of Hiking with Ghosts: The Chilkoot Trail Then and Now (Raincoast Books, 1999) and a contributor to Castles of the North: Canada's Grand Hotels (Lynx Images, 2001). Her stories of Canada's fascinating past have appeared in British Columbia Magazine, Canadian Geographic, The Beaver, Canadian Living, and Up Here. Frances also writes about nature and the environment and is the author of Woodpeckers of North America (Firefly Books, 2005) and Owls of North America (Firefly Books, 2008), as well as numerous articles in magazines such as Audubon, Canadian Wildlife, and Harrowsmith.
