Children's Literature - Children's Literature
This is part of the "A&E Biography" series and the profiles cover a rather eclectic group of women. There is the miner's wife who went into the restaurant business during the California gold rush by building outdoor tables and buying provisions at the local store. Then there is the story of young Virginia Reed who was a survivor of the Donner Party's attempt to cross the Rocky Mountains. Students may be surprised to learn how young many of these women were. Often life was hard and some of these girls felt they had no choice but to strike out on their own to earn a living. Annie Oakley (Phoebe Ann Mosey) was one such young woman and she was able to help her family by capitalizing on her marksmanship. Not so well known is Pearl Hart who ran away from home at the age of seventeen. Her claim to fame is being the first known stagecoach robber in the Arizona Territory. Other women featured include Laura Ingalls Wilder, Sacagawea and Calamity Jane (Martha Jane Cannary). 2000, Lerner, Ages 9 to 12, $25.26 and $7.95. Reviewer: Carolyn Mott Ford

In the 1800s, the lure of land and opportunity in the West proved to be a huge attraction for people who had lost their jobs or just wanted to claim the free land the U.S. government was offering to anyone who wanted to homestead. Also, in 1848, gold was discovered in California and many women with families went along with the men. Along with the description of the Westward Movement, the book presents a colorful portrayal of women: there is fascinating lore here about Sacagawea, Virginia Reed, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Annie Oakley, Margaret Tobin Brown (Molly Brown), Martha Jane Cannary (Calamity Jane), Pearl Hart and Belle Starr. The biographical information is sufficient enough for book reports in the lower middle school grades and there are a number of b/w photographs. The author, who is well known for biographies about famous people ranging from Elvis Presley to Rosie O'Donnell, captures the spirit of the women and their adventures. Gr 6-10-These clearly written series titles are useful as introductions to biographical history but contain no new insights. Crazy Horse, an Oglala Lakota warrior, was present at or took part in several major encounters with the U.S. Army during the 1860s and 1870s. His quiet, spiritual manner, as well as his military prowess, made him a leader among his people. Women who played vital roles in the development of the frontier are the subject in Krohn's volume. The move westward was expensive, tiring, lengthy, adventurous, dangerous, and rewarding as the author illustrates in the stories of Virginia Reed, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Annie Oakley, Margaret Tobin Brown, Calamity Jane, and Belle Starr. Both books include a few sidebars and average-quality, black-and-white photos and reproductions. Unfortunately, few captions note dates or locations.-Patricia Ann Owens, Wabash Valley College, Mt.
