Editorial Reviews

KLIATT
This compact easy-to-read collection about eight dauntless women is sure to aid the middle-school student with biographical reports. The first American women astronomer, Maria Mitchell, had an intrinsic curiosity about space and read every book about astronomy that she could get her hands on as a child. Harriet Tubman was a slave who led many other slaves to freedom in the North. Marian Anderson was once described by Arturo Toscannini as having a voice that comes "once in a hundred years." Other women include Susan B. Anthony, Bethenia Owens-Adair, Linda Richards, Margaret Bourke-White, and Jackie Cochran. Perfection Learning specializes in books that are high interest for less-able students. KLIATT Codes: J—Recommended for junior high school students. 2000, Perfection Learning, 64p, 23cm, illus, index, $8.95. Ages 13 to 15. Reviewer: Genoveve Rodriguez; YA Lib. Asst., Washoe Cty. Lib., Reno, NV, May 2000 (Vol. 34 No. 3)
From The Critics
Women with Grit describes the accomplishments of eight women who rejected society's expectations of what they could do and persevered to reach their goals. Astronomer Maria Mitchell is the only scientist included in the book, and the chapter about her life contains little scientific information. For example, the account of Mitchell's ability, at the age of 12, to adjust a ship captain's chronometer does not include an explanation of how the instrument works. Also, little is mentioned about what she observed through the telescope she used. Some astronomical terms appear in boldface type to indicate their inclusion in the glossary at the end of the book. The other women profiled are Harriet Tubman, Susan B. Anthony, pioneer doctor Bethenia OwensAdair, nurse Linda Richards, singer Marian Anderson, photographer Margaret BourkeWhite, and pilot Jackie Cochran. The brief biographies of each woman consist of a collection of facts and some fictional dialogue, all presented in a rather disjointed way. This book is appropriate for grades 4 through 8, although there are other similar books, in addition to separate biographies about most of these women, that would be better choices for young readers. (a CovertoCover Book.) Acceptable, Grades 38. REVIEWER: Michele Fabricant (freelance editor) ISBN: 0780790197
