Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Marlyn Roberts
This book is a great idea, in theory anyway. The authors profiled range from Hildegarde von Bingen to Jane Austen and Lina Wertmuller. Included in the biographical information are brief descriptions of each author's preferred themes, pseudonyms, and for some, synopses of major works. Each entry concludes with a list of the writer's works. The entries are detailed and well written, but the encyclopedia just has too many inconsistencies and omissions. While there are articles on Barbara Pym and Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, Mary Stewart, Daphne du Maurier, and Diana Wynne Jones are unaccountably missing. George Sand is profiled under the name Amandine Aurore Lucia Dupin, but George Eliot is under "Eliot" rather than Mary Anne Evans. Josephine Tey is found under Elizabeth Mackintosh, while Karen Blixen is listed as Isak Dinesen. Mary Westmacott, the name under which Agatha Christie wrote romantic suspense, is nowhere to be found. There are no "see" references under the real or pen names, although a list of pseudonyms does appear as an appendix, along with lists of authors by country and century. While an encyclopedia cannot be an easy thing to organize and compile, this effort seems at best slapdash. However, buy it anyway if you can afford it, since there is little (if anything) comparable. Index. Illus. Photos.

Provides access to the lives and work of a wide range of notable female writers from Great Britain and the Continent, from Aphra Behn to Emily Bronte, from Simone de Beauvoir to Isak Dinesen, from Bridget of Sweden to Hannah Arendt. Entries examine writers' lives and achievements, comment on individual works, and place artistic efforts in historical context. Each entry is followed by a bibliography of primary works in English and in the original language. Indexes by language, nationality, genre, and chronology are included.
