Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Anne Liebst
Did you know that several versions of the Equal Rights Amendment have been introduced in Congress over the years? It was first introduced in 1923 and finally defeated for ratification in 1982. This information and much more is included in a full-page sidebar under the topic "Civil Rights and Legal Status of Women." According the publisher, the Women's Almanac "features a comprehensive range of historical and current information on the life and culture of women in the United States and around the world. Black-and-white photographs and illustrations are included, as well as sidebar boxes and statistical tables to underscore the narrative. The same glossary and further reading list appears in each volume, along with a cumulative subject index (continuous paging is used). In the past year Gale has published not only this almanac but also Chronology of Women Worldwide: People, Places & Events that Shaped Women's History (1997) and Women's Firsts (1997) for academic libraries. For YAs, Abbeville Press has produced Heroines: Great Women through the Ages (1996), edited by Rebecca Hazell, and Scholastic Reference has released Scholastic Encyclopedia of Women in the United States (1996), edited by Shelia Keenan. This source offers more than insight into history, by examining related events and issues of interest. It is stimulating and kindles the mind for more. Its emphasis on different topics makes it easy to use; students simply look up their topic in the table of contents or the index. While many topics overlap, the commitment to history, society, and culture in each of the three volumes makes the almanac more than just a "list" of women's events. Three volumes, Volume 1: History; Volume 2: Society; Volume 3: Culture. Glossary. Index. Illus. Photos. Biblio.
