Description: This edited collection of articles on various aspects of women's health and Web resources on the topics is a reprint of the spring 2000 issue of Health Care on the Internet. A series of "separates" from the journal have been published on HIV, cancer, and now women's health.
Purpose: Women's health is a difficult topic to define and this collection explicitly address the issue. Ann Boyer speaks of women's health as a cultural construct and in many ways it is. Common disease categories can be as broad as cancer and as narrow as abortion and impact many men as well. However, women's health is a very popular category on many health Web sites and so it is worthwhile to know what's best. The book includes many excellent Web resources devoted to the health and well-being of women, but print publications about Web sites can be frustrating because of the relative speed of change on the Web compared with the slow turnaround and distribution of print.
Audience: The book is useful to a general reading public, although some articles are formatted with the URL references as part of the narrative paragraph and this makes spotting the resources more difficult. Librarians might benefit more from this publication, but typing in long URLs is error-prone and not fun. Most people would probably prefer a Web-based list of recommended links.
Features: The major problem with print publications on Web topics is how quickly they become out-of-date and almost useless as a resource. A random selection of URLs supplied in the 11 articles turned up many dead links and redirects. For instance, The American Medical Association has pulled out of the consumer health information business since this publication; AHCPR has changed to AHRQ; and many commercial sites are allowing for more annoying, aggressive, pop-up advertising on their sites.
Assessment: The most interesting articles cover the decisions behind designing and building Web resources. Librarians involved in content development for NOAH (New York Online Access to Health) and HealthWeb contribute to our knowledge of what's needed, what works, and what doesn't in the dissemination of health information. Otherwise, the book is out-of-date.
