The disc entitled Women's Lives and Loves is not for everybody -- only for those who treasure great singing, terrific repertoire, and a deeply affecting program. While it is possible that those who like their lieder recitals straight may at first question the ordering of the songs here, even those who like it straight may come to find this particular ordering surprisingly effective. All Music Guide - James Leonard
Graham Johnson, the superlative pianist who has accompanied some of the finest lieder recordings of the digital era, here groups together both Robert Schumann and Carl Loewe's settings of Adelbert von Chamisso's "Frauenliebe und -leben" poems interlarded with related songs by Schubert, Mendelssohn, Brahms, and Wolf, plus arrangements of appropriate Schumann's solo piano works as interludes in a totally unified program of songs and duets he dubs a liederspiel, a song-play. Sung by English soprano Felicity Lott and German mezzo-soprano Angelika Kirchschlager, Johnson's liederspiel is more than a clever expansion of the themes explored in Chamisso's poetry; it is an in-depth exploration of the deepest feelings of women. Sung with consummate musicianship, complete devotion, and excellent diction by Lott and Kirchschlager, Johnson's liederspiel moves from love through betrothal, marriage and motherhood to end with bereavement. Although some male listeners might find the sentiments too mawkish and some female listeners might find them too revealing, anyone who has a heart will surely find them unutterably moving. Hyperion's sound is as warm and as natural as life itself.
