Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Katherine L. Dec, MD (Integrated Musculoskeletal Medicine Institute)
Description: This informative book highlights women's sports medicine issues. Black-and-white illustrations, tables, and graphs supplement the text.
Purpose: The editor has selected a multidisciplinary panel of authors to address the sports medicine topics pertinent to women. Musculoskeletal through medical issues unique to women are addressed, as are other issues that may affect women but are not gender specific.
Audience: The book is appropriate for all sports medicine practitioners, medical students, and residents.
Features: The book has 24 chapters subdivided into the categories of musculoskeletal, medical, and age-related issues as well as general wellness concerns. Although thoracic and cervical spine issues are not addressed, the book is otherwise comprehensive in the coverage of information regarding women. The chapter concerning the knee is notably well-done; it is both practical and informative. Small bullet point sections labeled "clinical quidelines" are unique and assist in quick perusal of all chapters. Appendixes also supplement key points in chapters.
Assessment: This is an overall nice addition to the practitioner's library as a reference for sports medicine issues in women. The appendixes, practical diagrams, and concise "clinical guidelines" throughout make it a quick reference for various topics.
