Editorial Reviews

Each title in this series examines a pivotal period in history by presenting "a group of essays chosen for their accessibility" to young adults. Introductions in each volume provide an overview of the topic, and excerpts from articles and books are preceded by brief summaries of their authors' often-conflicting arguments. Appendices include relevant documents. American Slavery, for example, offers essays organized under five broad chapter headings: Origins of American Slavery; Slavery in the American Revolution; A House Divided: American Slavery in the Antebellum Era; Civil War and the End of American Slavery; and Was the Civil War Necessary to End Slavery? Within each chapter there are between two and six articles or excerpts, on subjects ranging from "Social Tensions Within Southern Plantation Society" to "How Slaves Responded to their Emancipation" to "War Was Not Necessary to End American Slavery." The authors, mainly history professors, provide a wide range of opinions that will help students hone their critical thinking skills. Discussion questions round off the book, along with an appendix of documents such as the Emancipation Proclamation and a chronology. Valuable for history classes as well as for high school and public libraries. Titles coming in 2001 include Ancient Egyptian Civilization, The Early Middle Ages, The End of Ancient Rome, The Holocaust, The Inquisition, and The Vietnam War. (Early Civilizations). Gr 10 Up-This thorough survey offers excerpts from books that range in date from the 1600s through 1998. The broad spectrum of viewpoints results in a concise, objective picture of this topic. Much of the writing conveys not only the facts of how women's suffrage was achieved but also a sense of the personalities behind the struggle. Particu-larly interesting is Robert Cooney's piece, "A Lasting Affirmation of Democracy," in which he emphasizes the importance of the movement as "one of the most remarkable and successful nonviolent efforts to change ingrained social attitudes and institutions in the modern era." While the volume includes such familiar names and places as Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Seneca Falls, Stalcup balances the book with articles about early African-American suffragists and militant suffragism. Inclusion of these varied histories has resulted in some repetition. Although all of the material is available in other sources, some of the original works are now out of print. The appendix supplies excerpts from 25 well-chosen documents. A few average-quality, black-and-white photos are scattered throughout. The book concludes with an accurate index, an inclusive chronology, and a topical bibliography. Overall, this is a solid addition to a field of study that is finally being recognized as an essential chapter in history.-Joanne K. Cecere, Highland High School, NY Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
