Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Ellen Welty
Princess Diana of the island of Themyscira, Wonder Woman's alter ego, is attending the Global Environmental Conference when she begins to suspect that wealthy businessman Rupert Javlar is not all he is pretending to be. He has been granted a large section of rainforest by the conference's host country to develop a seawater reclamation plant. Since the country has ample supplies of fresh water, Wonder Woman suspects that the water reclamation plant is a front for something more sinister. With the help of two traditional enemies, she discovers the truth. Graphic novels have always been good "beginner" books for reluctant readers and using superhero characters to convey popular values has also been an unfortunate but common practice in comic books and graphic novels. In addition to the pedantry, the artwork has been simplified from the original Wonder Woman series and there is no character development. A puzzling feature is the biographical sketch at the end of the book of one of the two traditional villains but the other one is not mentioned, leaving readers to think that there may be additional adventures in the future that feature the same characters. Teachers and librarians who purchase this book should also consider other books dealing with environmental issues such as Janell Cannon's Stellaluna or Betsy Franco's Pond Circle.
