More About This Book

Overview

Ghastly new home.
Potentially adulterous husband . . .
Not quite the fresh start in the country she was promised.

A fixer-upper in the sticks was the last place city girl Ro Skews expected to live. But her husband, Marcus, wants it -- and all the arguments are on his side, namely a better life for Tod, their wonderboy, who has developed social problems in London. Of course, the five-year-old has never been the most . . . conventional child.

While Ro (grudgingly) makes a life for herself in stuffy Chetsley (if you can count reaping the whirlwind of floor sanding and playing Suburban Lawn Warfare with her sexy neighbor as a life), Marcus starts spending more nights in the city with his cell phone switched off. And Tod, whose fascination with mazes seems to have blossomed into a full-blown obsession, treads the worrying line between eccentric and problematic.

Ro searches for the right path in a few mazes of her own -- her marriage, motherhood, country customs -- but when she unearths a shattering secret, more than one truth is revealed and Ro is left wondering: Is the country any place to raise a family?

Fiona Gibson is a freelance journalist who has written for many British publications, including The Observer, The Guardian, Red and Marie Claire. She is the mother of three young children.

    Charmingly written, enjoyable!

I enjoyed this book very much. The writer has a very funny sense of humor and it shows in the story she is telling. I could see this story as a movie and think it would translate well into that genre too. There is a simple story that keeps you entertained. I am planning to check out the author's other book now too.

    Mom to a Wonderboy

Fiona Gibson must have a child that has Asperger's syndrome. If not, then she has an amazing insight into what these children are like. Although Asperger's is never mentioned in the book, there is no mistaking the characteristics her son, Tod, exhibits. I really enjoyed this book, it was very pleasant to read.

    interesting family drama

Marcus Skews decides that leaving London to live in the countryside is best for his wife Ro and almost six years old son Tod. He persuades a reluctant Ro by claiming the eccentric Tod needs a different school having been the victim of recent bullying incidents due to his eccentric behavior and the neighbor in the flat above them seems to have a loose screw. Thus they move to Gorby Cottage, a fixer-upper, in Chetsley, population 1200 and just under two hours to London causing Ro to give up her job at Anna¿s Film Archives, not a bad thing as she hated her boss, but an extra major change. --- Not long afterward, Marcus goes to work with a severe cold that night he tells Ro he is too sick to come home. More days like that occur in which he stays in London. Soon she finds she likes Chetsley especially the friendly people kind to her son such as her neighbor Joe, who shows he wants her too. However, Ro stays true to her vows until she learns why Marcus spends increasingly more time in London. --- WONDERBOY is an interesting family drama that digs deep into the disintegration of a relationship by looking closely at the three prime players. Fans will know what makes Ro tick and feel for Tod, a brilliant but troubled child failing to adjust to formal and informal school behavioral demands. Though they will hiss at Marcus' indiscretions and avoiding his obligations, fans will understand his motives that led to his failures. Fiona Gibson¿s insightful tale is well written, though Joe is too nice and convenient. --- Harriet Klausner

    Wonderboy

Wonderboy Fiona Gibson Red Dress Sept ISBN 0373895321 * BR BR Abruptly, Ro finds her life uprooted when her husband moves the family to the countryside. Immediately, she is faced with a plethora of problems, from faulty cars, vermin, and other majorly minor catastrophes, not the least of which is her family life. Her son, Tod, is at the best of times, a challenge thanks to developmental problems. Her marriage is steadily going downhill, but there is nothing she can put her finger on, and Ro herself is constantly overshadowed by a sense of inadequacy. ...............................Not until nearly the end of the book do we get a clue about why these things might be happening. However, this book suffers from two major drawbacks. First, it is written in the present tense, which is a very distracting format for the reader. Second, it falls into the category of pwp- plot, what plot? The rambling style is peppered with slang that is not familiar to most American readers and often seems rather pointless.
