Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Everything reminds Mikele of ribbons as she goes through the day doing chores alongside her father, and no wonder-she's prepared a blue ribbon (which says "My Papa") for a Father's Day gift in Won't Papa Be Surprised! by Terri Cohlene, illus. by Elizabeth Sayles. The layered pastels of the illustrations create movement in the garden where the pair weeds and in the windsock suspended above the porch. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2-Mikele spends the day doing chores with her father, thinking all the while about the special surprise she has in store for him. As they work together, the child sees many things that remind her of ribbons, and each one is described with a repeated refrain that uses a different adjective. There is a chain made from purple clover ("Like ribbons, she thought, flowery ribbons"), the water from the hose ("squiggly ribbons"), and the steam from boiling water ("twirly ribbons"). As the book ends, readers discover that it's Father's Day, and Mikele's present is a "big purple ribbon with a badge that read MY PAPA." Now children will understand why these images were dancing in the girl's head. Papa also has a gift for his daughter ("If it weren't for you, Mikele, how could I even be a papa?")-a box of colorful satin ribbons. Here, the story's focus moves away from the special relationship between father and daughter and gets mired in heavy-handed imagery and trite dialogue. Still, the book's heartwarming sentiments may appeal to some audiences. The pastel illustrations are joyful and warm, with a smooth and soothing flow of color and action, and help to sustain the mood.-Martha Topol, Traverse Area District Library, Traverse City, MI Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
Mikele and her Papa share a special Sunday together eating oatmeal, gardening, fixing the front step, hanging a fish-like windsock, washing the car, and finally enjoying a honey cake and tea break while they exchange presents for Father's Day. Ribbons of all kinds are Mikele's fancy as her eagerness and excitement build throughout the morning, imagining ribbons in all the tasks they accomplish, patiently waiting for the right moment to give Papa his gift. The sun's reflection appears at breakfast on the kitchen wall and Mikele sees "sunshine ribbons." In the garden she makes a "flowery ribbon" from the purple clover, the windsock delights her with its "flippety ribbons," and the steam from the teakettle flows like "twirly ribbons." When the anticipated moment arrives, Mikele proudly gives her purple ribbon "My Papa" badge for her Father's Day gift and receives a surprise in return. Satin ribbons in her favorite colors of lavender, pink, and periwinkle are from her father, who lovingly and gratefully explains that he could not be a papa without Mikele. Soft, dreamy pastels in muted tones of peach and purple for indoor scenes contrasted with pale greens and aqua blues for outdoor views perfectly complement the gentle and reassuring theme of mutual love and respect between a father and daughter. Ribbon imagery is woven well throughout illustrations and text, making this Father's Day story a favorite any day of the year. (Picture book. 3-5)
