Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Part of the "Springboards into Science" series, this book guides young naturalists through the life cycle of a wood frog. The text describes how the frogs mate, how the young are born and how they eventually grow from pollywogs into mature frogs. The accompanying photographs are sometimes very intriguing, such as the shots of frog cells dividing and a series of photos chronicling a tadpole's metamorphosis. Using few technical scientific terms, the text is easy for younger students to read and breaks down complex biological functions into simple, easily-comprehended ideas. At the end of the book, the authors ask readers to put a series of pictures into chronological order. Also included is a list of suggested frog-related activities, resources for further study, a glossary and an index. It is a solid introduction to amphibians and also a good vehicle to discuss cycles of life in general. Bearing the "Weekly Reader Seal of Approval," this volume would make an excellent addition to a science classroom or school library. 2001, Gareth Stevens Publishing, $19.93. Ages 4 to 8.
