Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
A husband-and-wife team who have written a number of woodworking titles for beginners, the Bridgewaters have created another winner. This title, part of Sterling's "Basics" series, offers an excellent introduction to woodcarving. It begins with a description of tools and their care, then moves on to wood selection and the use of knives, axes, and adzes. The major styles of woodcarving (chip, relief, and sculptural) are introduced in short sections that are supplemented with black-and-white photos and drawings. The Bridgewaters' instructions are excellent. Readers are shown how to complete three projects (a rustic country stool, ball-in-a-cage puzzle, and wildfowl decoy) that use many of the techniques described. An excellent and reasonably priced introduction, this title is recommended for public libraries. Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
Library Journal
In the span of seven chapters, three projects, tables, and a glossary, the Bridgewaters have crafted a fine introduction to the art of woodcarving. Woodworkers themselves in addition to being authors of dozens of titles on the subject (e.g., Power Tool Woodcarving, Sterling, 1994), they intend their current volume for beginners. Coverage of the basics of trees, wood, and lumber is accomplished quite well. Gentle and practical explanations of the basic tools, safety, carving, and sharpening techniques in text, line drawings, and photographs engage the reader. Discussions of more advanced tools and techniques are mentioned but not exhaustively covered in the early chapters. The projects are interesting and require precision and attention, but the results are worth the effort. This guide is well suited to the motivated beginner and useful as a reference point to the occasional but experienced carver. Recommended for do-it-yourself and hobby collections.-Alexander Hartmann, INFOPHILE, Williamsport, Pa.
