Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Vicki Foote
A mouse named Woodrow G. Washingtail is elected as the president mouse and gets to live in the White House along with the president. He attends the Inaugural Ball with his mouse family. He has a desk on the shelf in the Oval Office, and keeps busy making new laws. Intricate illustrations show the proceedings, and one page depicts Woodrow as the chief executive with pictures and labels of all the departments of government. It explains that he is "Commander in Chief," and so is in charge of the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines. He is also the "Head of State," handling foreign affairs. He gets to play every Easter when they have an egg-rolling game on the White House lawn. More elaborate illustrations with interesting details portray the East Room, the Red Room, and the Green Room. The Blue Room is decorated for Christmas. The story is told in verse in short paragraphs. Pages at the end of the book provide additional information for parents and teachers about the presidency according to the Constitution, facts about the presidents, and history of the White House. Children can look for the Presidential Seal that is hidden in each picture. This book, in the "Little Patriot Press" series, is a good educational resource that could be used by adults to read aloud and discuss the concepts with children. Children will enjoy the fun drawings of the mice as they work and play around the White House. The book should be a useful tool in helping children to understand some of the basics of the governmental processes. Reviewer: Vicki Foote
