School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 7-9--This well-written, well-organized biography gives readers a real look into Wilson's personality. It covers his entire life, but also devotes a considerable amount of space to his academic positions and subsequent political career as governor of New Jersey and president of the U. S. Randolph is objective about the man, admiring of his honesty, incorruptible morals, and compassion; but also discussing how his rigidity kept him from making the compromises necessary for effective leadership. The book has enough historical background to help readers, but is mostly a personal account, with events discussed as they related to Wilson. Numerous black-and-white photos show the subject and his family and also illustrate important parts of the text. This title is more readable than the still useful World Citizen: Woodrow Wilson (Messner, 1967; o.p.) by Archer and much better than the dated and incomplete The Woodrow Wilson Story (Crowell, 1963; o.p.) by Peare. Its strengths make it a good first choice or replacement title. --Mary Mueller, Rolla Junior High School, MO
