Overview

It defined a generation, exemplified an era: Woodstock was unlike anything that has ever happened before or since—and August 2009 marks the 40th anniversary of this seminal event. Relive the moment and “get back to the garden” with this day-by-day, act-by-act account of everything that went down on Yasgur’s Farm. With interviews and quotes from those who were there—the musicians, the fans, the organizers—and a wealth of photographs and graphic memorabilia, Woodstock is the ultimate celebration of a landmark in modern cultural history.

Woodstock is organized in three parts:

- Origins sets the stage by describing the counterculture of the time, along with the festival’s organization, fundraising, buzz-building tactics, ticket selling and publicity, and site building.

 - The Event—the heart of the project—includes a log with a run-down of each of the 32 acts, in the order they appeared, one spread to each name. Fans and politics are also featured prominently here.

- The Aftermath focuses on media coverage, follow-up festivals, Michael Wadleigh and Thelma Schoonmaker’s documentary, and Woodstock’s enduring legacy.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Having been talked about, written about, filmed, photographed and remembered in the hearts and minds of millions worldwide, Woodstock remains the seminal musical and cultural event of the last century. In this coffee-table tribute, Evans and Kingsbury offer a balanced, moving and chronological pictorial of each of the 31 acts from the three and a half days, beginning with Richie Havens and ending with Jimi Hendrix. In addition to a foreword by Martin Scorsese are numerous, firsthand accounts from concert-goers, crew members, farm hands and musicians like David Crosby: “It looked like an encampment of a Macedonian army on a Greek hill, crossed with the biggest batch of gypsies you've ever seen.” The book provides political and social context that led up to the “three days of peace & music.” Flower child or not, readers will come away with a tangible Woodstock experience (though perhaps without the smell). Color photos. (July)

    Woodstock Rocks!

This was a beautifully presented history of that most memorable of music festivals of the 20th Century. It evokes some of the best memories of that era, offering little known details of the myriad groups who performed (and also those that didn't and why). The organisers who had a vision, the farmer who offered his land for the venue - truly amazing people. This book is a perfect gift for anyone who ever attended a real rock festival, or for those who wish they had - some extraordinary photography!

Woodstock: Three Days That Rocked The World

This was a wonderful book to read. Fun and informative, this book is a must read for anyone who has an interest in what the Woodstock 69' concert was all about. Along with the great photos, this coffee table sized book gives an inside chronological look at the three day festival as it unfolded and its aftermath. I found myself smiling quite often as I read the book.

    Wow! Woodstock

I first noticed the book while browsing in the book store. I did not want to pay full price simply because I am stingy. Around Christmas time I received a couple online which, combined with my membership discount made buying the book a phenomenal deal. Since then I have read parts of the book--I've just been too busy to get through all of it--and I have found it fascinating to hear all of the details of the background of forming the event and the event itself. I am very glad I have the book.

    Amazing Book

I read this book because I took up an interest in the 60s and 70s and wanted to know more about Woodstock and the story behind it. This book gave me just that. I couldn't put it down. It really takes you on the journey of how Woodstock came to be, the people and musicians behind it and also the three days of peace love and music.

    Trip down memory Lane

I bought this as a gift for a freind that attended Woodstock and he has loved it. The pictures and the writings were detailed and enjoyable. When he received it he wanted to just "flip though it" but found himself looking at each picture and page intently. For someone that was there it was truly a trip down memory lane and for those of us that were not, after reading this you will feel like you were. GREAT find and cherished gift.

    Woodstok memories

I bought this book as a gift to my husband who was one of many who celebrated the three days of peace and music. When he opened the book the memories flooded back when he and his buddies from Rockaway drive up in his friend's car on a whim and enjoyed those three days in the rain. The pictures and the stories brought back the joy of the weekend mostly being there when Jimi Hendrix performed. Bravo on the work done to put this book together and for bringing joy to my husband.
