Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Book and CD combos are becoming more and more popular and I think in part due to one of the first books (if not the first) published by Tortuga Press, Jazz Fly (don't have it or know it? Go get it!). I love well-done book/CD combos since combining words and music is so great for our pre-readers (and our readers) and has children memorizing entire books because songs are easy to memorize. Wooleycat's is presented as a children's stage presentation of nursery rhymes, each song (and skit) beginning with the original nursery rhyme and then expanding it. For instance, here is the chorus to Humpty Dumpty-"Pull...yourself together, Humpty! (When you tumble, trip and fall.) Pull...yourself together Humpty! (When you're feeling beat.) Turn your sunny side up and scramble to your feet!" I wish I could convey the toe tapping, finger snapping, spirited award-winning music (this was originally released in 1992 as a CD only) that goes with the text. A hit with all ages. 2003, Tortuga Press, Ages All.
— Sharon Levin
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1-This book takes 10 Mother Goose rhymes, expands them, sprinkles them with little lessons, then sets them to perky, folk-style tunes. For example, Humpty Dumpty pulls himself together after a kiss from his mom, Miss Muffet opens a bake shop with the spider, and the cow who jumped over the moon becomes an astronaut and makes insightful comments on caring for planet Earth. Hickory is a hang-gliding mouse who leaps off the clock to have an adventure and learn moderation, Mary takes her lamb on the road, three blind mice take a trip around an elephant, and Jack and Jill teach problem solving. This husband and wife team coauthored the rhyming songs that Hysom sings on an accompanying CD. Walker's brightly colored cartoons illustrate the antics. Good intentions occasionally muddle capriciousness and the messages loom large. Overall, though, this is a pleasant addition for libraries looking for more book and music combinations.-Jody McCoy, The Bush School, Seattle, WA Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.

Music as the Key to Reading!

I have to share a success story with this book! My son, who is in 2nd grade, has not read outloud to me since last year at the beginning of first grade. He has not been motivated to read at all. But he has read Wooleycat's to me about 5 times. It was the music that turned him on!!!!! He listened to the cd and read the book with the cd. Now, at night he will just pick up the book and start reading it out loud to me. I bet many little musical boys could benefit from this approach.
