Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 1-3-In early fall, Miss Rosemary's third-grade class learns that Joe Dean's family is moving to Michigan. His last few days in school are concurrent with ``Woollybear Week,'' in which the whole school competes at collecting the caterpillars. The count seesaws daily until, on the last day, Brenda climbs the forbidden redbud tree to catch the winning caterpillar for room 301. As Woollybear Week Captain, Joe Dean has his name recorded for posterity on his teacher's plaque. He sends the class a rock from Lake Michigan to be part of their rock collection, and in the spring the woollybears reappear as Isabella tiger moths, reminding everyone once again of Joe Dean. Cote's gouache paintings in bright fall colors are warm and appealing. Shading is achieved with interesting overlays of strokes and colors. A gentle, good-natured school story.-Ruth Semrau, formerly at Lovejoy School, Allen, TX

A sweet story of friendship, nature, teamwork and saying goodbye. A good story to address feelings when a classmate moves away. Also can be used as a springboard for teachers and parents for nature projects. Cote's detailed, multicultural illustrations are endearing to all who pick up this book.
