Barnes & Noble - Lissa Kiernan
Imagine marrying Joni Mitchell's songwriting skills with Norah Jones's jazz sensibilities, and then throwing in Sarah McLachlan’s well-trained voice -- and knack for a well-turned pop hook -- for good measure. Sonya Kitchell’s Words Came Back to Me, Starbucks’ next "Hear Music Debut," easily recalls such notable predecessors, all the more impressive since she is just 16 and has authored each of these remarkably sophisticated songs herself. Make no mistake, this is not teeny-bopper music. Still, an infectious, childlike joy infuses this collection with the sense that Kitchell is playing more than working. Yet Kitchell has clearly done her homework; her masterful control...

Make no mistake, this is not teeny-bopper music. Still, an infectious, childlike joy infuses this collection with the sense that Kitchell is playing more than working. Yet Kitchell has clearly done her homework; her masterful control and phrasing recall that of her mentor, jazz vocalist Rebecca Paris. The blues-oozing "Can't Get You Out of My Mind" and the aptly titled "Too Beautiful" are among the standouts here, but there is no slack or filler on this disc. Don't overlook the hidden track, either, a charming tribute to Kitchell's little brother. Like him, we have a lot to learn from Kitchell, who reminds us to see the world as if for the first time. nor filler, whatsoever. This is not good!

Just from listening to the segments of these songs, I feel that Sonya is too slow and has a very husky voice. I heard about her from GL, and when I read the article, I wasn't very impressed. So now I listened to her, and she's just like one of those Nora Jones wannabes.I don't understand how people can like this.

    showstopper!

I first heard Sonya Kitchell at a Jamie Cullum concert in NH. I wasn't sure what to expect as most openers aren't worth getting to the concert on time for. Sonya was just wonderful! Not only is her voice clear and soulful, but she seems so mature for her young age. Her cds sold out quickly and I was unable to get one at the show..so I made sure to get one as soon as I hit the store!

    An Amazing Up-and-coming Original Singer/Songwriter

I heard Sonya open for Dar Williams in concert she practically stole the show! She was amazing. My husband bought me her album Cold Day that night, and it's a favorite in my player. She is refreshingly soulful and her mix of blues and classic rock-folksy sounds is an audial treat.
