Ο Ανδρέας Καρκαβίτσας (1865-1922) ήταν μια σημαντική μορφή του ρεαλισμού στη νεοελληνική λογοτεχνία. Γιατρός στο επάγγελμα, τα ταξίδια του στην Ελλάδα επηρέασαν το έργο του, που χαρακτηρίζεται από ενδιαφέρον για τα ήθη, την καθημερινή ζωή και τις λαϊκές δοξασίες. Το λεπτομερές ύφος του και η κοινωνική του ματιά τον καθιέρωσαν ως κορυφαίο εκπρόσωπο της εθνογραφικής αφήγησης. Ανάμεσα στα γνωστότερα έργα του είναι τα Λόγια της Πλώρης, ναυτικά διηγήματα, και Ο Ζητιάνος, μια κοινωνική κριτική στη φτώχεια της αγροτικής Ελλάδας.
