About the Author

Joanna Kotcher holds a Master’s Degree in Global Health, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a BA in International Studies. She has coordinated emergency response in conflict environments for the past 18 years in such locations as Kosovo, Central Asia (Tajikistan), Afghanistan, Darfur, Gaza and the OPT, Somaliland, Syria, and Iraq. As a Medical/Surgical Coordinator Ms. Kotcher has coordinated and managed medical teams in the start-up and full implementation stages of projects that assist populations in need of emergency medical and surgical care during armed conflict. She has also coordinated post-conflict actions during the period immediately following “official” cessation of armed conflict. Working in insecure environments, Ms. Kotcher has extensive experience in the design and implementation of medical/surgical actions, team building and support, implementation of standards and guidelines, medical and nursing staff training, and team mentoring. She continues to study and learn while working in the field and maintaining membership with notable professional organizations in the combined disciplines of humanitarian studies and medical/surgical assistance.

Description: This is a workbook that accompanies a textbook by the same name. It covers the surgical technology profession and professional behavior, then moves into the surgical environment in the big sphere of health care, followed by overall patient care and then perioperative standards. Finally, it covers individual categories of surgical procedures. The author uses fill-in-the-blank definitions of key terms and short answers to cover material. Multiple choice, matching, and labeling are offered to learn material. Case studies are the highlight of the book as they involve critical thinking on the student's part. The author mentions a skills checklist, but I could not find one. If it is available, it would be very valuable as self-reflection is always a good tool. The previous seventh edition was published in 2018, and due to advances and update of practices, this is an appropriate time frame to update the text. I did not see any mention of COVID practices but that could be another reason to update the text as practices have been updated. Important topics of lasers and robotics are included and updated.
Purpose: According to the author, the workbook's objective is to solidify a student's awareness of their grasp of the topics presented in the text. This workbook follows the book seamlessly, chapter by chapter, with the book giving the student material to practice and ensure understanding and comprehension of the material presented. The activities review important concepts and enable readers to apply what they have learned to the activities such as the case studies. The book meets the objectives as it actively engages the student in activities that ensure content mastery. I believe workbooks are a much-needed tool in today's fast-paced learning experience. Workbooks, especially those paired directly with a textbook, can improve learning success and make students more active and effective in the learning process. This book meets its objective by helping students actively review and test themselves on the content.
Audience: This book is intended for surgical technology students covering all the major surgical procedures in categories that are familiar to the surgical suite. I agree with this audience and also see a use for perioperative registered nurses who work alongside surgical technicians and desire to learn the scrub role. The book meets the needs of the intended audience. It uses several student-centered learning activities and the case studies could be a gateway for open discussion in the classroom. The author is a certified surgical technologist (CST) with a BA and a program coordinator at a community college. This qualifies her, but I would like to know if her BA is in education or curriculum. A short bio in the front of the text would add to her credibility.
Features: The material is organized in a building manner starting with the profession, then the basic principles, and ending with the specific categories of surgical procedures. The book presents the most current technology especially in robotics and lasers. The learning activities build on one another starting with definitions and short answers, followed by matching and multiple choice questions. The chapters end with case studies. This is learning scaffolding, starting with reviewing the knowledge, testing the ability to recognize the knowledge, and then applying the knowledge to scenarios requiring critical thinking and application of the knowledge. I would like to see the graphics in color, especially the human body drawings, but perhaps the quality of the paper makes the shades of black and gray clearer. An index would help if students were looking for a certain topic, along with a list of graphics so they could be located faster. The book lists a skills checklist, but I could not find one for students to use in the OR, so the book should identify those more clearly. A clinical skills performance checklist available for use by students and preceptors would make for a full circle of learning as surgical technology is a hands-on profession.
Assessment: This workbook can enhance learning for surgical technologist students by filling in learning gaps. The case studies can spark some interesting discussions. Some of the short answers are worded differently than in the textbook, so they make students think critically. In places, the workbook is regurgitation of the textbook, which is not as helpful. When I Googled this workbook, I saw that many of the chapter answers from the seventh edition are posted on the web. This is a real downside to this kind of text, but with this new edition and some changes to the content, hopefully it remains challenging. In reviewing book sites and the library, I did not locate another workbook. This workbook being paired with a textbook is one of the reasons I would use it and suggest it to programs.
