Horrible sample! Who knows if it's good from that?

Trying to branch out onto other things is always easier when there is sample, which there is for this...27 pages, which is a nice sample to determine if this book might be an option for purchase, except 24 of those pages are reviews, acknowledgements, or simply don't exist....THREE pages (!) out of 27 that doesn't even scratch the surface of the opening scene. What kind of sample is THAT?!

    a terrific chemical Zombie thriller

Bryn Davis learned two things about being in the army in Iraq for four years; first the military was not a career for her and second she handled corpses without her stomach betraying her. After leaving the service, she became a Funeral Director at the Fairview Mortuary. Her new "commander" Lincoln Fairview IV is a bit creepy but embalming a cadaver is imprinted in his DNA.

When she finds the corpse of a woman whose late father was the client, Bryn feels a bit unnerved. However, it is when she finds her boss and his prime henchman Freddy selling a unique pharmaceutical, she becomes more than unnerved; Freddy kills her. Investigator Patrick McCallister revives her with a special top secret drug. He hopes Bryn has insight into the source of the leak of the drug that keeps the dead alive for twenty-four hours at a time. To obtain future doses of Returné; Bryn acquiesces to work for McCallister.

The opening of Rachel Caine's newest urban fantasy series is a terrific chemical Zombie thriller as the heroine learns what it means to truly be a Working Stiff with ultimate undying loyalty to one's firm. Establishing rather quickly the realm of the Revivalist, fans will relish Bryn's adventures in death and life as she and McCallister investigate the selling and misuse of a pirated drug returns the dead benefactor into a slave zombie.

    Lost me already

21 pages into this book and I am already bailing. As a female 12 year veteran of the US Army I'm actially insulted by this authors attempt to portray her characters inner strength by making derisive remarks about a military institution they clearly know nothing about.

    Talk About Rigor Mortis

Talk about rigor mortis. What a chore this book was to read.

Bryn Davis is an ex-military newly licensed mortician who stumbles upon the black market dealings of her employer. Turns out her boss sells more than death's accessories but a drug for an afterlife. Reanimation is all but impossible and Bryn is going to find out first hand as she's thrown into a second life filled with corporate espionage and dependent on finding the back ally dealer suppling the stolen drugs.

This whole book was stiff. The characters bland. Joe and Patrick had promise but they were secondary characters. Pansy was vibrant and interesting but she was a third string player. The big problem was just a dull heroine. Bryn had the personality of a walking corpse. I also found that the chapters were way too long, they added to the feeling of not getting anywhere in this book. Unfortunately there was also no romance happening at all and just when you think something is going to develop Bryn gets beat up. More like a punch in the gut for the reader. The story line was ok, but took forever to get anywhere. There just wasn't anything to get invested in.

Working Stiff was working hard to bore. With a sad lead character, no romance, an extremely long drawn out setup, there was really nothing to interest me or hold my attention. This book was one great failed concept after another.

    Suprisingly Great

I really enjoyed this book and look forward to the series. It provides a great twist to the 'zombie' concept. More importantly, I could relate to Bryns struggle to cope what has happened to her. Loved the blooming relationship between Bryn and Pat (even if its borderline necrophelia). Also provided plenty of mystery and action sequences. Overall, a well rounded written book that has a little bit of everything for several genre of readers

    Love this book

I received an uncorrected proof for this book at one of the author's promotional signings. I love it! It's a really good book and I have no idea where it's going which I really like... It'll definately keep you guessing and is on par with Morganville! Bryn is exarmy so you know she's already pretty tough... I thought that's a neat twist to her. Read it, it's fantastic!

It's not bad. I've read all the Morganville books and quite frankly I wondered if Ms. Caine could do anything without "cute" speak. She does, and pretty well, too. It's ok, it's readable, but it's not great.

I have really high hopes for this series. The first book was good, but
it took a little longer to gain the necessary momentum than previous
first books by Rachel Caine. Overall it was good at introducing all the
characters and high arcing storyline. It was good at provoking emotions
either good or bad about the heroes, heroines and villains. The end of
the first book definitely propelled me to read the second which I plan
to start today, but I took a star off simply because of the time it took
to latch on to the story, characters and want to keep reading.

    Rachel Caine can do zombies

Working stiff is the first book of the Revivalist series that Rachel Caine has for us, you may know Rachel Caine from her previous work in the Morganville Vampires, Weather Warden and the Outcast Season series.

In her new book we get to know Bryn Davis a former military that wants a stable life, so she decides to enter the business of the dead in Fairview Mortuary but after one of the worst first days ever, everything changes for her and now she is own by the pharmaceutical company Pharmadene and she must work with Patrick McCallister (her new boss) and Joe Fidelli trying to find a dealer that is selling Returné that brings the dead back to life and the illegal operation down Bryn must adjust her self to all the new changes in her life with out forgetting about her old responsibility's such as taking care of Mr. French her dog.
It's important for them to know how is selling the drugs because they have this particular side effect it can turn you into a zombie slave.

I love that when I was reading this book it was hard to put down it felt like I was going to miss part of the action in the story, I liked the characters specially Patrick McCallister whom you can't help but love even when he isn't that nice to Bryn and and Joe Fidelli is just a lovable character his personality makes you like him almost immediately. I believe it's a really good its fun, entertaining and with a good amount of action with a spice of mystery.
The only thing I would like to change about the book is the physical form of the book it just feels like I could hurt the book if I opened it completely and honestly its not something I like to do with my books. Besides that I wouldn't dare to change a thing.
My only doubt is... what happened to Mr. French??

    Disappointed

I've read everything by Rachel Caine and enjoyed them thoroughly until I got to this book.

I was promptly turned off in the first chapter with the funeral home business. I thought, maybe it will get better! But I set it aside after the 2nd Chapter a mere 50 pages into the book to read something else and found after finishing what I set it aside to read, that I had no desire to return to it.

It is a rare occurrence for me to not finish a book and this was one of those times.

If you enjoy dark, macabre stories of the walking dead, you may enjoy this book. But for me, not so much.

    Sample not worth it

This 24 pages of acknowledgements and 2 pages of the story. Read in the store to decide if it is worth it. I will repost and rate the book after reading the full test of the story.

ehhh... Can't wrap my head around the basis

I've read all of R. Cain's other work. Which I enjoy. I can't wrap my head around this characters dead body up and living. She's like a zombie... who wants to romance with a zombie... yuck. sorry. can't do it.

    I Also Recommend:

I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE NEXT ONE!

Ms.Caine has done it again. AMAZING 1st book in a new series. It's more darker than Her other books but still has Her incredible wit, which I love. I can't wait to see what happens to Bryn,Patrick,Joe & Mr. French next. Good luck to them. They are going to need it!
