Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Daniel L. Sudakin, MD, MPH (Oregon State University)
Description: This is a general reference on topics relating to workplace health and safety.
Purpose: The purpose is to assist readers in identifying hazards associated with their workplace. These are worthwhile objectives, given the prevalence of work-related morbidity and the difficulties encountered in the recognition and management of these problems by healthcare providers. Most of the important work-related issues are adequately covered.
Audience: This book is targeted towards the general reader seeking guidance on how to avoid work related injury. It is also written for the layperson, as well as for caregivers. Although some of the content would be easily read by the layperson, several chapters include content that is highly technical and would be difficult to comprehend. Most of the information contained in the textbook comes from credible sources, including NIOSH, OSHA, state health departments, and well-respected occupational health professionals.
Features: Basic chapters on workplace health and safety are followed by specific issues presented by organ system. Although most topics are comprehensively covered, some of the content is clearly oriented towards the healthcare provider or safety officer, not the layperson. The majority of the references are current and clearly presented (including links to information that is available on the Web). There are very few figures or illustrations included. The book includes a brief glossary that defines some technical terms, followed by a comprehensive listing of resources for the layperson seeking further information about workplace safety.
Assessment: This book provides helpful information on a variety of timely and important workplace health and safety issues. Although it is targeted to the general reader, some of the content is more appropriate to the occupational health and safety professional. It does provide general readers with empowering resources, and for this reason alone it is a worthwhile contribution to the field.
Helps readers identify hazards associated with the workplace, ways these hazards can be avoided, and steps toward recovery for those who have been diagnosed with a workplace-related disorder. Issues concerning protective equipment, toxic and hazardous chemicals, child labor, stress, workplace violence, and the effects of workplace hazards on the body are discussed. Material is drawn from publications issued by federal and state government agencies, and by organizations. Includes a glossary and lists of resources. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (
